what type cams would I have on a standard 998?

just asking cause im being offered a bmc aea649 cam. probably too wild for a 998 anyway but could be nice to just hold onto incase I go crazy in the future or if i put it into the next motor that goes in.

how would I tell if I have the pin or spider type?

Look in back of cam, if no cross pin in there it's Spider drive.
Spider drive cam has 3 drive slots in back for the spider.

A 649 cam in a 998 would be unusable on the street.

A 649 in any motor is unusable on the street. :)

The 649 is the Cooper S factory full race cam and is actually a C-AEA-648, even though it is stamped 649 and commonly called that. Nothing under 4000 revs then all the way to 8200. Needs a full race prepped engine, definitely not a 998cc.

I had an original 649 in my first Mk2 S and ran it as daily transport to Uni during the week in the late 70's. The motor wasn't that special : 1310 flat tops, weber, lcb, balanced, good head and springs. It went like a scalded cat after 3700-3800, but still quite drive able below that in peak hour traffic - but the traffic wasn't as bad then and I was a young Uni student that liked the loopy idle :D .

A 649 drivable in peak hour traffic below 3800? I'd like to see that.

correct me if I'm wrong { I normally am } but I think the 649 is also known as the 176 here in Kangaroo land. We run a 176 with 1.5 rockers, 11:1 comp, big valve head with modded ports and a light flywheel and it pulls away from idle quite nicely, copes in traffic and fully wakes up from 3800 rpm upwards :) We have just on 530 thou lift at the valve.

The 176 is an old school race cam only bettered { at the time } by the 176-0 scatter pattern.

If you like a lumpy idle, something that might not be pleasant in city stop start driving but an animal on the hi-ways then just go for it ..... why learn to walk before you can run ? lol

I run a Clive cams 81A in my daily 1380, lumpy at idle, pulls hard from 1800 through to 6.5 { ecu cuts out any more fun past that } 362 thou lift on stock sintered rockers { 1:21 or thereabouts}

From my experiences (this was nearly 40 years ago), it comes down to whether you have timed the cam in properly and not just lined up the marks on the timing sprockets. Made that mistake originally and it was a pig.

I ran a 649 in my 1380 street car as a daily commute car in LA back in the 90's including bumper to bumper traffic and it was a pig! Fuel consumption was terrible about 13mpg and went through clutches like oil changes. But Oh boy when the traffic cleared it all became worth it.....................

Good idea! a 649 needs a very good modified head and compression ratio's above 10.5:1 to work at all. I don't think you could get a small bore head to flow well enough to use it. aggressive cams tend to get milder with increased capacity. My current build for my 1960 uses a sprint profile 8 port cam which is the next step above the 649 and will be in my 1380 with an original Arden 8 port with twin 40 DCOE's compression set at 12:1. All for my weekend warrior.
Here is a list of the Spec's for the 649 and others if it's useful to you.
