Hey Guys,

I‘m still waiting to collect my Leyland Mini Van, but naturally I‘ve already begun modding it in my mind.

I believe the engine is basically stock. What are some mods I could do to get a few more hp from the engine?

Hopefully further down the track I‘ll have a fast 1.3l in her, but that wont be for at least the next 12 months.

Cheers,
Shreds

I put one of these kits on my car. Once it’s been tuned up it’ll help it go and sound a bit faster. If you want more power again you’d get a modified head and new cam

Do what P platers do, put a big shiney louď muffler on it. Good for another 50hp.

service it...

If it hasn't been meticulously looked after, put some good quality oil in it, change all the filters, clean the spark plugs, clean the points. They didn't make a whole heap of power when they were new so things like dirty spark plugs and points can take a large percentage of the power from the engine. plus it won't cost a lot to do.

get it tuned and sorted out by a mini professional

and add your location to your profile, that's worth a few HP

If he is after "a couple more hp" before a 1275 engine then possibly spending thousands on a high performance complete engine rebuild might be a step too far.

A couple of bolt on mods and a proper tune up / service will get the most bang for your buck, especially if you're planning a bigger engine in the future.

Brakes, suspension and grippy tyres.
Do the basic stuff because their is no point spending thousands if you plan to swap it out soon.

Yes the main question is "how much money do you want to spend"?
-For under or just around $1000 you can get your current engine spruced up, tune and service the carby +new air filter (K&N), new coil, electric dizzy, plugs and leads etc. A good healthy stock small bore.

-If you want to spend around $2000 you can look at just a cam upgrade and some head porting, maybe some bigger valves and rockers if you can get good prices on parts and labour.

-If you chose both of the above you will have a very good small bore, a bit more hp and torque and more responsive and reliable. But then you should be looking at a rebore to get the full effect which can easily be another $1000 and then where do you stop? another 2-3k on a gearbox freshen up and diff upgrades...
Now you have a fast engine in your cr@ppy drum brakes and stock suspension car. Set aside another $2500 to get discs and adj suspension plus good tyres.

-Add half of that up and you have enough money to buy a stock 1275 which you can in the future do all the same things to and get awesome power.

A fully worked and bored out (+ 0.100thou or 98mm pistons) small bore engine can beat a stock 1275 but it will cost twice as much. If you are planning on going 1275 in the future I say (like most others) just service it and up grade your bolt on accessories. And don't forget to up grade your brakes, tyres and suspension Their is no point going fast if you can't stop or corner. Minis get there speed and fun in the corners so enhance that area of the car. When you upgrade to a 1275 you will already have good brakes and suspension so it's a win win, do it early and you will love it.

This is my fully worked 998cc Cooper racing engine. Up here in Sweden the 1275cc engines is "supply and demand" nowadays, so my engine is a
experiment in modest budget & little more hp! A lot of the metalworking of the engine parts is "homemade". The engine wearparts (rings, bearings, camfollowers, oilpump)
is new of course, but almost the rest of the engine and gearbox (1300GT) is used parts! The engine are 52-55hp in STD.. The rolling road later this season gonna tell me
how much my upgraded engine reach in hp.
The car already have 7.5" brakes, Gmax shocks and ordinary alignment(camber/caster/toe) front and rear. Really good, in my opinion, for my Fast Road & Track Day purpose!

is that a 1275 head on a 998? I put a 1275 head on a 1100, plus other bits at the time, carby's extractors etc so not sure what made the most improvement. I was just a dumb young kid then, I'm older now but just as stupid.
