Well this went from a quick clean up to a rebuild very quickly. But, upon inspection of the original engine we found a but of a lip in the bores..soo
I pulled the engine to degrease and inspect. And it has led to this ...haha
I split the block on Friday and have it sitting in the tank for the weekend . Will overbore it on Monday and order new pistons and rings. The original Mowog pistons had some slap marks on them.
Crank is standard. In real good condition.

Will also refresh the auto box. ( I have just always want an auto a series) they are getting rarer now so will be an interesting experience into the world of the AP2 box.
JPAT in the UK still sell the rebuild kits for the and I will consider doing the clutch upgrade mod on it after I inspect the boxes condition.
Shout out to Peach Performance here in Brisbane . Geoff is letting me use all his gear and they are a top bunch to work with. Geoff machined my Deluxes engine 6 months ago as they are 2 mins from my house its very convenient.

We were jokingly talking about turboing the engine givin the low compression ... but i think I will leave that alone for the moment !
I need to focus on getting these cars on the road! That’s were the fun is.

that's a large journal crank, you could stroke it, just need some small journal rods and a bit of machining

Dismantle was quite straight forward...its always the putting back together that’s more challenging right? :)

Kit arrived .
Some of the old plates were delaminating . I think I might need to get the brake bands rebonded as they are not in great condition .

That plastic sleeve on the nose of the forward clutch acts as a ring compressor when you assemble the box. Otherwise the two sealing rings on the nose can get broken. You fit it over the rings and it pushes along as you refit the cover.

The manual shows a jig for locating the oil pipes, you can get around it by using a bit of stiff wire and a screwdriver to move the pipes around and feed them into the cover.

Hi, I think its been apart before, as its not an original idler gear bearing, never split rollers then, and I personally put the bearing in the other way I would put a groove in that face to try and get more oil in there, and to me most of the marks look like corrosion as if its sat for a while. Clean it up with wet and dry, and I think it will be fine with new idler bearings (get Japanese)

Looking for suggestions on this please.
It looks like the thrust on the idler was not set properly.. very hot bearing and thrust washer are cactus .. see photos .
The thrust surface on the case and the cover have been affected to, so looking at milling options .
Are thrust available on different sizes ? And is the idler in the auto different to manuals ?

I have fixed this problem on manual boxes by milling an equal amount from original thrust face and housing face. But check it won't creat a problem elsewhere.
No, the idler gear is different from a manual one.

You could also get a machine shop or toolroom to make thicker thrust washers, using same material and heat treatment.

Thanks Doc . Just need the confidence to go down that road . Will mill the faces up a tad and see what thickness washers I will need .
As these boxes are getting harder to find in good nick it’s been interesting learning ways to fix rather than replace .

Hi mate been following this thread with interest as I have a auto box due for a rebuild. What's the diff ratio is this is it 3.27, what the number of teeth on the diff and pinion?

Sorry I haven’t pulled the diff out . So i cant tell you ....well i suppose I can have a crack at counting the teeth ..

I think it will be type standard as per Workshop manual specs

Let the fun begin.
The case has been machined so I’m just left sort the thrust clearances out for the idler .
Pretty sure i will have to get machined up some new washers.
