Post subject:  Radiator too big for round nose? 1100s 1275cc engine

Hi all

I’ve got a 1275 from a 1100s sitting in the engine bay of my Deluxe. My Deluxe is a bit of a Frankenstein and it has an automatic subframe but engine mount spacers. It used to hold my 998 but I pulled it to drop in the 1275.

I’ve measured the 1275 radiator and it’s about 30mm wider than the 998 radiator. The rad shroud on the fender also suits the smaller rad.

I obviously want to keep the larger rad and I’ve been jiggling the 1275 in the engine bay to try make it fit but it just doesn’t.

The 1275 rad is 320mm wide and about 400mm tall to top of cap.

Any ideas on why? Can I use the smaller 998 radiator on a 1275?

Cheers everybody

Which top radiator bracket are you using - the one from the thermostat to the radiator? Is it the 998 or 1275 one?

And is it a mini radiator or 1100S? Do you have the engine steady connected on the drivers side? The engine might be tilted forward

That looks like a Morris 1100/1100S radiator and shroud - they do sorta fit in Minis with a bit of butchery, but 1275 Minis used the same radiator as 850/998/1100s.

The bracket is the 1275 rad bracket, but it’s been removed to gain some wiggle space. I just had a look online and there are two types of 1275 rad top bracket. A larger one for a clubman which I have. That’s one problem solved.

The radiator is a natrad. So I supposed I should swap back to the 998 radiator???

No engine steady bars are in at the moment.

Thanks Matt. What butchery are we talking? Sledgehammer whacking or cutting and rewelding.

Will search forums to see how the 998 rad operates on a 1275

I am still running a 998 auto radiator on my 1360. No problems with or without the Matic heater in use.
This radiator is 16 gill/inch, same as Deluxe, K and Cooper S.
Beware some aftermarket cheap 'Cooper S' radiators imported from UK which had only 8 gills/inch- they don't cool as well and are flimsy made.

Thanks doc.

The rad from my old 998 is a NewCell AYA2243 (or something like that... hard to read the stamping). Its a 3 core but it’s weird!! It has a 30mm ish pipe in the top tank. It still operated well in the 998 mid summer though.

Have you tried a set of 1275 mini engine radiator brackets and cowling? I had a mini deluxe where the PO had fitted an 1100 from a Morris 1100 and they used the associated cowling and bracket and sadly butchered the inner guard to make it fit. I sourced the correct cowling and brackets and radiator now fits as it should. I have a big alloy radiator in my Supercharged mini and it has mini 1275 brackets and it just fits. There are also about 4 different bottom brackets and 3 top bracket which all are slightly different

I just swapped their radiator over to the original smaller type and it all fits better. Had to change the rad bottom mount as well and the shroud was also different.
