Hi all has anyone had central locking installed in their mini?
I just had it installed yesterday but took it back today one reason being the wires came out from behind the door panel and over the top of the pocket - looked like absolute CRAP with a double P = CRAPP (+ he had to finish the job took him hours)
So I went and bought him some rubber grommets from notsosupercrap and getting him to drill a hole in the bottom of the pocket to feed the wires through low.

Anyone had this experience??? (not using that fitter again......)

i inquired about central locking when i got my stereo and alarm fitted at car audio excellence and they said it cant be done which i know know is because there lazy by strathfeild car radios install guy said it can be done but because a mini doesnt have that jointed flex arm between the door and the car the wires after time will fray and must be replced but it in a gromet will delay this but not prevent it and instead of the normal $40 a door its $100 due to the bigger motors needed to operate the control arm for the lock where did you get yours fitted? so i know where to avoid

Well got Putt Putt back after a second day with installer and yes ran a plastic gromet through the bottom of the door pocket which looks heaps better and yes he found the battery he lost for the second remote after the first day. The little antenna for the pager looks like crap on the windscreen lower right hand side (in field of view when driving) plus the sensor in the boot has bent.

BUT the piece de resistonce (I spelt that wrong)
- from the installers mouth "You will need to take the door locks off and soak them in wd40 or oil or something as over time they get jammed up with garbage and gunk and the central locking motors will burn out over time" (I asked how long their warranty was - hehehe) he says this because now neither side will unlock under the power of the door central locking motors so ooooahhh have to unlock with a friggen key - it is going back tomorrow so they can find me another fitter to fix the screw ups of the first fitter.

ERRRRRRR - can't repeat name but PM me if you wanna know who it is - NOT Strathfield or Northfield .....

There's a reason central locking actuators come in different torque ratings you know...

As for running the wires, this is what I'd do (more work but I always go over the top)
Run the wiring between the two faces that meet when the door is closed. Now normally it would bunch up when shut and stretch when open right? So what I'd do is cut the wire and fit a series of flat metal plates, rubber grommets and spring loaded pins so that when the door is open, all that you see is the plates, when the door is shut they butt up together, completing the circuit so the actuator can work.
It wouldn't work with the door open, but you never use it that way under normal circumstances anyway.

Or you could go a wrecker and get the little rubber hose thing of a jappa. It should mount about 3 inches higher on one door jamb than the other; acceptable practice to avoid shorting out wires etc.

What I'm waiting for is an electric window kit for a Mk II

Places that have no idea when it comes to minis should just tell you so and be honest. So much easier then the hassle of chasing up dodgy work.

I took the moke to pedders once (don't ask) and they wanted $88 to *diagnose* what was wrong even though I told them what I wanted fixed!

did you buy the kit from minisport or asimilar place, or did they supply it ?

no was not a genuine mini shop i bought it off one of the big sound/hifi stores who quoted my wife and said they could do it.

The wire is now following the door strap which is good

The problem i had with it not unlocking i have just spent the afternoon fixing myself - took door looks off soaked them in petrol and fed about 4 tonnes of graphite powder into each one of them. They work beautifully now. Pity I lost the little clip off one of the solid bars need to go find one of them errrr.
