Well I’ve been working on this idea for over a year now and as I’m starting to make a prototype I thought I’d start a thread for some updates as I go and I’m keen for some constructive criticism too.

A bit of an explanation of what I’m try to achieve might help...

The gearbox fitted to my panelvan as I purchased it is the trusty old rodshift unit. As my van is a 66 the tunnel has no provision for a rodshift and as a result was very poorly installed, floppy, and gradually destroying itself due to the terrible angle of the shift rod.

So, I decided some time ago to try and fabricate a remote style housing for the rodshift box that will solve all of my problems. Hence “Rem-Rod”!

I decided from the start it must,

*Be able to be fitted and removed with the engine In situ.
*Be strong enough to act as a suitable “torque arm”.
*Not be any lower than the original remote housing.
*Allow room for a 2” exhaust in the tunnel.
*Weigh the same or less than the original remote.

If the prototype I’m building is successful, I will have all the info I need to draw it up in cad for plasma cutting. Ultimately I’d like to fabricate it from 304ss.

Cheers,
Silas

Good idea, can't wait to see it progress.

Wow, great idea and great work so far. Thanks for sharing.

I wonder if there's a wider demand for such a product? You may have to give your day job away.

Even if you just had a 90 degree angle on the angle you have it now and across the bottom face it might provide enough strength?

It reminds me a bit of the PPF bracing under an MX-5

Thanks, if it goes well enough I’ll look at making more. I’ve been thinking that basically any rodshift mini could use something like this, less wear- no additional top engine mounts needed- and hopefully a much sharper feeling shift too.

Thanks for the input Timmy!

The angle idea is something that I pondered for some time and may still try at a late date.
My only reservations are that,
1- The shifter will only be supported at the rear on the right side.
2- The size of angle will have to be substantial to counter any twisting or lateral movement.

This is a great idea. Anything that strengthens the rear of the rod and the way it is mounted, would be an improvement. I'd buy one for a reasonable price and will keep watching.Cheers Paul M

Love a good C.A.D. template.

Don't make it in 304SS use something in balance on the galvanic table.

Make it from steel and hot dip galvanize it, it'll be a nice sacrificial anode. :)
Mind you it won't corrode anyway with the oil fog that trails from an A series.
Good idea BTW. ;)

Silobin, I would think that these would sell well. Don't need to be fancy, just work by adding stability. I definitely want one, so please let me know when one is available. And where is Woodhouselee?
Cheers

This is a very good point, thanks besser! Maybe I’ll look into powder-coated or hdg steel as doc says.

Thanks for the input folks :D

Thanks mate, I go to Canberra a few times during the year, so now know where you are. Any timetable on a prototype?
Cheers
