Hi guys,

I need to bend up some 50mm x 3mm pipe. I have seen the usual 12T or 16T hydraulic benders in the $100 to $250 range. They say it can do up to 2" pipe.

In your experience does that include thick wall 3mm pipe? Does it bend smoothly (albeit with a narrowing through the bend) or does it tend to create folds?

Advice would be welcomed :)

(FYI it's for a roll bar type bar going behind the b pillar to replace strength to allow me to cut the back off to make it a ute).

Make an accurate template and get it bent at a metal fabrication shop.

The radius on those home pipe benders would probably be to large. I would suggest making a template and going to your local exhaust shop. When I worked at one we used to do it all the time. If you supplied the pipe I cant imagine they would charge you much.

I used to get my roll cage bits bent at a good exhaust place.

Thanks guys, sounds like great advice. I'll take the template to a fabrication or exhaust place. Cheers!

Hi Morbo, why 50mm, is this what the engineer wants?

Cheers Scott

i had been told to always use a tube bender on roll cages. NOT a pipe bender. The die /mechanism is to ensure no kinking ( applies pressure outside the bend compared to almost punching the exact middle of the bend in a pipe bender.....So, being clueless, i googled tube vs pipe etc and now would have to agree to steer clear of pipe benders.. Now if anyone can understand all the information in the CAMS roll cage info at first read go to the top of the class.

I used a local exhaust shop in Penrith.
He also does CAMS roll cages.
He also supplied the correct material.
It was a simple pipe bender without the internal mandrel.

Thanks guys. Yep engineer wants 50*3mm tube. Not roll cage per se but strength replacer for removing rear roof.

I'll look into a place with a tube vs pipe bender cheers.
