Here's where we're at...

Image

Inner race is on the plunger, the rest of the bearing was in the bottom of the clutch housing.

The condition of the thrust plate felt fine, but I'll check what that mark/chunk is that I only saw on this pic

The inside of the wok.

I think I'm just up for the bearing. But why the hell did it collapse? I've done about 2.5K kays since the build...Maybe I'd be better off with the flat faced, so called higher spec bearing.

Wow. That would explain your problem.

Is it possible the clutch adjustment done after the build was such that the bearing never actually left the face of the diaphragm, so was continuously rotating, even with your foot off the clutch? That would wear it out pretty quickly.

Possible...not sure.

Okay so new bearing installed. I'm not sure how to setup the two nuts to adjust the amount of play. Do I set it here out of the car, or do it by feel in the car?

If anyone has a link to the setup instructions that would be appreciated. Just trying to search on my phone in the shed, not having much luck

I've installed the wok, I'll set the clearance and button the rest of it up when I get a chance. I'm taking the opportunity to do oil and filter and degrease (oil everywhere from a rocker cap leak :/ )

I hate those clutch bearings , not a lot of contact area to the pressure plate
Guess I was lucky when I had my engine and box built back in 2011 that I got a nos flat face bearing

I keep any second hand ones that may come my way
have one for my other gearbox I built

new flat face bearings are now available I hear :D

Hey slacko, yes I had this bearing sent from a local supplier, I should have got a flat faced one. In hindsight there were indicators that the bearing was going. If I hear them again I'll switch to a flat faced on.

I think misalignment caused mine to fail.

Hey John, good info. I actually saw that you had them in stock, but not til after I got this one from a local supplier, dammit! Next time I grab something from you I'll order one ready to go for one of the Minis if needed.

In fact I think I have already added it to my account basket on your site :)

Just to finish this thread off, it's all installed, adjusted and it's the best it's ever been.

Small update. Driving along and heard ... Tink...tink tink tink...tink...tink tink...

Counted the scraps of the old bearing...missing two ball bearings. Might just have to get this puppy back up on the stands. Still, it's actually quite a quick job, and who needs knuckles anyway.
