Hello All ,
My 1970 C.S has a MK 1 C.S engine could BMC have stock of the MK 1 engines and had to use them ?
Also my C.S has never had the metal strip, which is welded to the bottom of the roof channel one each side.I have seen one other mini without this strip.

if you check the MK1 register, the answer is "no", it was the other way around - late MK1s had MK2 engines

your engine number (9FSAY44226) is in the range of cars that were built in July '67

the last MK1 engine numbers were in the 51,000 range before they changed over to the MK2 blocks, and it looks like the numbering kept on going from there

edit: is there any evidence spot welds for the drip rail at all? I took mine off early last year because a bit of rust was forming, I do want to put them back on but only when I find some that are correct for an Australian car

and people swap and change "Cooper S" engines as they see fit...I once spoke to a man who had a MKII engine in a MK1 he was selling "because he wanted to keep the MK1 engine for his MK1 car"...

Back in the 60s and 70s they were just another (but higher priced) Mini, when the engine expired most people got an exchange recond one from Repco or wherever.
Matching numbers? Nobody then gave a toss. ;)

I had what I believe to have been an early mark 2 as my first Cooper S in 1970. It was Malmo green, black interior, with factory flares, reverse lights wiring in the loom, Alternator with external regulator, Mark 1 heater, Mk1 brake booster and Mk1 9FSAy engine with 3 speed synchro gearbox.
A pity I never kept any paper work to verify numbers. :(
