Hi Ausmini Folks, I'm clutching at my final straw...

I have had a problem for quite a while now with vibrations through my steering wheel caused by wheel wobble.

At lower speeds it seems like the car is driving on egg shaped tyres, but then at higher speeds it obviously
skips along causing a constant and significant vibration (up and down) through the steering column. At some speeds
it is reasonably bearable but then at others it is extremely annoying and possibly dangerous!

When I jack up the car and run the front wheels, they do not run true, it looks like they are running an elliptical motion
around the bearing centreline and the CV joint is not running square in the hub.

Now, as I said this has been going on for a while now, so I have tried many many things to try and solve it including...
Wheel balancing (numerous times)
Wheel alignment (numerous times)
Stripped and rebuilt the hub (numerous times)
Tried different hubs
Replaced the bearings (numerous times)
Replaced the CV Joints (numerous times)
Replaced the brake discs and pads
Tried various sets of rims
Tried various sets of tyres

I now have near new hubs, drive flanges, CV Joints, bearings, rims and new tyres and still the problem persists.
I had the bearing outers pressed into the hubs to ensure they were square, and I fairly recently found out that I needed
to skim the bearing spacer to get the correct amount of pre-load on the bearing. This has improved things I must admit
but the bearings are now fairly tight yet the CV joint still does not run square in the hub. The CV joint is running in an elliptical
movement which then makes the wheel look like it is buckled (but it is not!).

BTW, these are 8.4" disc brake hubs.

Does anybody have any other suggestions as to what could be causing the CV joint to run like this?

This seems really hard to explain in words and might not raise any answers but I am at my wits end!
Many thanks for reading

Richard

Any chance of photos? A video even?

I don't have anywhere to host images/videos at the moment, I can try and get something posted up later!

Could it be something to do with the inner CVs or uni joints? if these are binding up or not working properly they might create a wobble.

What about the driveshafts themselves either bent or out of balance?

There's the slip joint on the uni joint driveshafts but I'm not sure it would cause it that sort of vibration.

You don't need to have photos hosted externally. Upload to the Ausmini server direct as described here - viewtopic.php?f=25&t=96873

It could be something to do with the driveshafts and inner CVs but it is the same on both sides (more or less).

I think removing the driveshafts might be my next option. Would the driveshafts or inner CVs contribute to both the
low speed bobbing and the higher speed shake?

Thanks Winabbey for the info on posting images but it doesn't seem to let me upload videos, I tried .mov & .mp4 files.

That's right - no videos, just photos. I think it's because of the video file size issue. You'll have to use YouTube or similar to upload the video then provide a link to it in your post.

I'll try to post a video later, photos will not really show anything.

Would a bent driveshaft cause the CV shaft to run out of alignment?

It sounds exactly like what happened to me many years ago where a wheel widener (no-Mini) welded the hubs slightly off centre...but your wheel aligners, different rims etc discount that...could the upper and lower ball joints be so loose as to cause that movement??

that's a fun one... I'm very curious!

It couldn't be that the bearing isn't square in the hub, because the CV would keep the same angle, so it's gotta be coming just from the CV or driveshaft. If the driveshaft is bent then it would be putting that kind of movement on the CV, but the bearings are meant to keep it aligned... you'd think that doing it up tighter would remedy it which is what you have found, until the bearings are destroyed that is. You'd also expect to find that the diff bushes are rooted

I'd be taking the wheels off and getting under the car with it idling in 1st gear and having a look at whats going on. You can hold on to the brake rotors on either side (maybe use thick gloves tho) to slow it down and get a better look

Nothing has been mentioned about the steering rack. Is there wobble in the steering arms from the hub to the steering rack??

If the CV joint is not running true (on centre) it sounds like dodgy CV joints.
Without the wheel on, does the disk run true.
Is the spline on the CV on centre with the CV shaft ?

Need to lift the car and remove a wheel and run a dial indicator against a brake disc and the wheel mounting hub. If the hub has the stud PCD out from the true centre that could be it, similarly if the wheel mounting face isnt square. Also check that theres no float on the assembly- the last lot of new CV’s I bought were manufactured incorrectly and the hub bound up on the spline before the bearings seated the right amount.

The CV balls may be rattling around and causing some movement?? But that would be obvious by the clicking?

Whatever is done, I would be reluctant to drive this on a public road...in horse terms, you are liable to throw a shoe!!

Thanks for the replies..

The ball joints are tight, and the hub remains solid.

The steering arms do not move with this motion.

The CV joint angle in the hub, does NOT stay constant! So it is not just misaligned bearings!
For another attempt at a description...
The centre point on the inner and outer ends of the CV joint are traveling around in two circles, when the inner is at the top of the
circle, the outer is at the bottom of the circle. Maybe elliptical was the wrong word!! It is not a great amount of movement but it is constant and
consequently the drive flange, disc and wheel all do the same thing.

It could be dodgy CVs? However, I'm sure last time I had them apart I tried doing up without the bearing spacer and they would easily
lock up the bearings! I'll check the end float again!

I have a local mini guy coming to take a look in the next day or so, hopefully he'll spot something that I haven't!

I think I'll be getting my driveshafts checked too pretty soon! And possibly the diff! :(

Many thanks guys for you suggestions :D
