Re-post to add info back in....

I'm looking at my first mini purchase which is advertised as a cooper however, the plate and chassis number on the radiator shroud do not match up. See image of the stamped plate below. I was looking for a away to try and identify what type of model it is.

The ID plate is from a 1964 998 Cooper. The car is a 1969 - 1970 Mk2 Mini.

so in other words, "no, it's not a cooper, but someone has attached the plate from a cooper to it in the hopes of making it worth more than it actually is"

I think the price is quite resonable for what it is. Its had a bare metal resto and is sporting a 1330 all for $10k.

Thanks for your replies and research. I'm waiting for a phone call back. I shall report my findings and see what everyone's opinion is.... so far it all looks pretty good accept for the dodgy plate.

Ask if there is a chassis number stamped into the radiator shroud. It will start with either YG2S1 (Mini K), YG2S3 (Mini 1100), YA2S5 (Mk2 Matic).

or if the (newly stamped) chassis number stamped into the radiator shroud matches the ID plate...

He couldn't tell me the number on the radiator shroud as it wasn't clear so sounded like they didn't match up. Anyway missed the sale so looks like someone got a decent mini as long as they weren't worried about the chassis nqumbers...

so the story unfolds and the car is almost mine (exiting times). I will be getting the car shipped to me and looks like I can't inspect prior due to commitments. The car has a 'Lancaster motors' stamp with a stock number which I don't think is very helpful and the seller has scrapped the body deadener off the radiator shroud but no numbers..... I'm only after a mini that's in good nick and not fussed about genuineness. Can anyone see any issues in the future?

Scenario #1 - rightful owner surfaces, you lose the car...

I would not be rushing in...

My experience in NSW is that they will not accept that numbered plate as proof of identity to be used for rego purposes. They willl want to see numbers “permanently affixed” ie stamped into the metal of the shell. That plate can be easily removed and transferred to another vehicle.....

The rules may differ in other states.

Cheers, Ian

You should report them to the police. Just make sure you give them enough evidence as possible to help in a conviction.
