Does anyone happen to know if the Aussie MKII Cooper s Hydrolastic subframes had the MOWOG stencilled branding over the black paint? Are there any references to original finish and decals or stencils that anyone is aware of? This isn't my subframe but an example of what I am referring to. Many thanks!

This is how I did mine. It was hard for me to actually pin down weather or not they were originally done. I have some pics of the originals that I worked from. Some said yes, others said no. Either way it looks good but can't be seen anyway. I know its there.
I have both the stencil and the stamps for the star and the backplate numbers.

I looked closely but couldn't find any stencil marks in either front or back of my late 1970 MK II S. Anecdotal evidence from others with a similar age car puts me in the non-stencil camp for at least the MK II.

According to the parts book the UK sourced rear subframe was used up to at least the last of the round-nose models - part 21A1655. Initially this subframe was used in all the hydro sedans but at some stage a different subrame is specified for DeLuxe (part 21A1588, as in iansmini photo above) and Cooper S (part 21A1979).

The front however was a locally modified version of the UK subframe so was given an Australian part number. In fact several part numbers so there must be some differences between models.

sounds like it would be best to err on the side of not stencilling a part number as there appears to be no clear part number for my car. if it wasn't for the surface rust I would know. Thanks for the comments Ian.

The star is a dark red as far as I can tell.

I found these pics from when I restored my 69 Mk2 S - no MOWOG on the opposite side to the part number - BTW your brake backing plates look very nice!
regards Gavin

Thanks for sharing Gavin. Do you know the significance of the blue versus the red star?

thanks Firefirey, seems such a long time ago now! (2006) and only travelled 3000 miles since - now at 75,000.

TimW - sorry mate, I enjoyed the restoration and did my best to keep it as original as possible, but the colour significance of the star I don't know. I would think that subframes would have been assembled offline at a sub-assembly station, maybe the star colour difference signified different shifts or plant locations, maybe even suppliers if the subframe welding was done off site?
regards Gavin
