As I continue to tidy up my wiring just wondering if anyone can tell me how the factory routed the harness for the engine on a Mk 1 generator (Cooper s)

Did they run part way under the slam panel then out to the solenoid and generator.

Or did they go down low, branch up to the solenoid then under the dissy (or over??) to the generator and coil?

I’ve tried to look at photos but it’s usually obscured.

Thanks

In case it helps, on my MK II all the wiring goes along the slam panel and branches out to the ancillary at various points. There are small tabs to hold it in place along the slam panel.

Hello Philb,
I just had a look at my 67 Mk1 S for you.
My loom tucks under the slam panel and drops down between the horn and the oil cooler pipe.
1 group of wires go to the solenoid and the other wires make their way to the generator, coil etc.
under the distributor. There is also a wire folded back and taped to the loom. I think it is the oil filter
warning light feed that is not being used.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Glen

I am pretty sure this is the correct way the engine loom is routed.

Thanks, I’m thinking on a Mk2 they could do that for the alternator because the connections are further past the middle of the car on nearside, but on gen car they are right near centre and quite low down.

Thanks Glen and GTO. From what I’ve seen on original cars coming out just past horn seems right, I was wondering how they navigated past the dissy and under seems the only logical way.

Glen is yours right under the lower base part of the dissy or just under the cap?

Hi Phillb,
The wires are just under the cap about where the dissy cap and body meet.
It actually lays part of the way on top of the oil cooler.

Glen

Also. Do the headlight connectors exit around the same point as the parts of the loom heading to the engine (described above). Or do they branch off earlier on their own?

Hello Phillb,
Headlight connectors and passenger side indicator and park light seem to come out horizontal from where the solenoid wires drop down vertical.
Also the driver side indicator and park light wires leave the loom where the slam panel meets the inner guard
and pass through the hollow section in the slam panel.
Regards,
Glen

Great thanks. Out of interest, from the point where the indicator wires leave the loom to the park light is there any connectors? The wiring layout drawings and circuit diagrams seem to indicate none, ie a continuous wire right up to the park lights where they plug into the back of the bulb holder.

Edit: perhaps this would explain why so many are cut as people can’t be bothered dismantling the park light.

Hello Phillb,
Yep you are correct no connectors, out of the loom and to the park light.

The park/turn lights on my 1970 S have their own short loom of 30 inches length with bullet connectors for joining the main harness, which avoids having to disconnect from the bulb holder itself.
