Hope someone can help. If you are doing a disc brake conversion for a mini with a converted engine such as 4EFTE or GTI and you want to use 12 inch weels which are the best brakes to choose and what would each cost?

For ease of installation I'd choose the Metro Turbo vented 4 pots. These have cast iron callipers which are heavy but nice and rigid. If weight is an issue then replace the callipers with alloy ones of which there are multiple brands available. These look good, work with the stock single brake hose and are light but sacrifice noticeable amounts of pedal feel.

If you want to increase your track width, use the metro turbo drive flange and callipers compatible with them. If you want to retain the standard disc track width and use vented brakes then you will need machined discs and offset callipers. The Mini-sport ones and KAD ones are like this.

If you are going to run big wheels, then you have options for brakes from another car but this requires research, design and engineering.

Thanks Mokesta. I want to be able to fix 5x12 wheels. Do the Metro Turbo vented 4 pots make you wheels stick out further from the guard that drums? Is that what you mean by disc track?

What machining would be needed for the disc? Are offset callipers easy to find as I tried mini sport and minispares couldn't find any.

The stock vented discs need the inside of the hat machined to clear the hub seal. The steering knuckle needs a bit taken off to clear the disc and the mini drove flanges need the disc mounting holes enlarged to suit the M10 mounting screws.

Mini Spares callipers suit the un-modified discs and metro drive flanges. Mini Sport and KAD callipers suit modified discs and mini flanges.

Metro turbo callipers and mini spares callipers can be fitted when using mini flanges but they need spacers between their mounts and the hub. The spacers are simply washers about 8 mm thick, from memory.

Metro flanges will space each wheel out by 12mm compared to the mini flanges. These in turn are equivalent to spacer drums. So, if you've got any of the usual wheel sizes, you'll need flares with metro offset.

There is some confusion because mini spares sell drive flanges that are metro ones with the castellations machined off. People can think that they are standard mini ones.

Good and thorough info from Mokesta as usual.

I have the vented metro front-end on my van and the W&P arches just cover the tread on the 12x5s.

I have metro's too with 12 x 5 rims. The main issue is when you do a correct wheel alignment you will find that due to the larger offset then you will have to cut part of the front guards away.

Wow!

At over a thousand Euro, thats not cheap (AUD$1,652.00)

Plus rebuilt hubs, new CV's, bearings etc would push the price close to AUD$2,000

Maybe Metro's offer a more effective option for the budget conscious builders amongst us!!

Cheers,
Tricky
