Travelers are heavier, panel vans are lighter than sedans. Window-less panelvans are the lightest.....correct :?

Djya get it from Steve in Sydney, ex-Canberra car :?:

Yep thats the one, I understand it stood on a lawn in Lyons for many years, any more info? I'd love to track down how it came to be in Australia. Your photo is obviously some time before I got it. the white woolly stuff on the back of the seat is a bit grubbier now.

At present I have it stored while I get a workshop and garage built. I've been slowly collecting up parts to restore it, with the aim of making it as correct as possible.

Hi Tim, The 'verbal history' that came with my Countryman was that it was a Canbera Based British Embasy car so yours may also be one? If only we could figure out a way to confirm or deny this. Was your car sent to Murray & Charleton (destination Dealer) (of your Heritage Certificate) in Midlesbourough before being sent out to th colonies?

Garry

Hi Garry, yep I got the same story but apart from our cars being built very close together there isn't much else that ties in. Mine was delivered to Derbyshire Motors Limited.

cheers
Tim

There was a discussion a while back about the British High Commission having a few Travellers to run round in...you and Tim may have found two of these cars

An early owner of Tims car may still be in Canberra and may know more...

does yours have Cooper 7" disks on the front?

I've heard that the high commission cars came with disks

Mine doesn't but Garry's does. I'm not sure about that one though, 997 Cooper production didn't start until July 1961 so it would have been difficult for them to have sourced the brakes until later. My guess would be that if they did have disk brakes they would have been added after they were delivered.

I don't know if there is copyright on the BMC information, but if AWOODY hypothetically sent me copies they might look like this. I would also like to hypothetically thank AWOODY.

I like the "All-steel for safety and strength". Implying that the wooden one is dangerous and weak? Weird really because the wood is just decorative and they are built the same underneath.

Perhaps they should have come clean and said "All-steel 'cos its cheaper to make"

People were a lot smaller in the '60's. In fact I was only about 2ft tall in 1969, and I could fit into the back seat of my Mum's little 850 really easily. I'm almost 6ft now.
