nice progress!

Seeing this sort of work always gives me an urge to go to the shed and stick random bits of steel together... for some reason.

Can't wait for a cruise. This goes for you too Hallsey!

I just noticed I was up to 499 so figured I make it the 500 in my own build thread.

Sadly, I have no news to report on the Morris build. I was busy building a Valiant to meet a deadline a month from now. Got one side of new floorpan welded in and a bunch of new parts here. Was all going well but I have just had my hours cut back at work so even if I make the deadline I won't have the cash to register it. Doh!!

Anyway, I have sourced a MIG welder so that should help with the Morrie once I get back onto it, it's pretty much only body and paint left.

Oh, and brakes, driveshafts, wiring, interior and exhaust. But those are easy!

(Is there an icon for self-delusion - that's how we all keep going with these long term projects isn't it?)

Right, was all set to do final welding on the queue-jumping Valiants A pillar today, but it has poured rain all day here, it still is actually.

Nup, too wet to weld out there…

Image

However, the Morris is in the shed, so since I had all the stuff ready to go, it got a bit of attention instead...

Managed to get a fair bit of this tricky repair to the rear wheel arch done.

This is how it looked after I discovered it.

Image

The PO must have tried to fix this, somone had soldered a piece of tin over the hole and bogged it all up. Needless to say, underneath was very nasty. Rust right through from door jamb to inner guard. I think this was the location of one of BMCs notorious "sponges".

Did the inside of the arch first.

Image

This pic shows the profile that had to be recreated in steel.

Image

Now while I am getting reasonably confident with this rust repair caper (I have just replaced the entire floorpan of the above mentioned Valiant) there was no way in hell I could make that with 1 piece so it was made up from a bunch of bits. Pretty happy with how it's going so far, not exactly a show quality file finish, but a crap-load better than what was there, and it will be covered with a flare anyway.

And I painted these the other day when I had the paint out.
Custom radiator surround/shroud which locates the recored 1100 radiator at the front of the engine bay. Weird shaped I know, but it works.

Image

You can kinda see how it goes together in this pic. This is looking from the engine side.

Image

And while I'm here, I made this the other day. It's the cutout in the inner guard for the alternator. Still to be welded in. And yes the shape is a touch wonky, but you won't really see it once it's in.

So there you go, I think it will be fine tomorrow so it will be back to the Val, but some progress is better than none. I think I will lose custody of the Mig I currently have over christmas so I might try to get a bit more done before I have to give it back.

Cheers

Yep, I bought some bolts the other day. But that's about it.

They are long socket headed ones for the top arms on the front. They needed to be socket headed to allow me to weld the offset washer to them and still get a tool onto them to tighten them up.

Anyone know how legal or otherwise it will be to weld the washers to them. They are equivalent to grade 11.5 or something. And what about zinc plating them once they are done?

Hey Madmorrie,

WRT the brakes, I have been meaning to post this up for you but couldn't remember who made the calipers. I found the company again in the thread about the RS Cossie mini. Anyway , dont know if this helps but here goes -

The caliper bolt spacing is 3 1/4in (82.55mm) which is the same as lots of other stuff but I did some research after reading about the possibility of using Austin princess/Ambassador 4 pot calipers on an 1100. The princess calipers are a common upgrade for the ford folks. The princess calipers would require larger disks on an 1100 and being iron would be very heavy but getting hold of a pair here would be the hardest part. Then I came across HiSpec brakes in the UK - http://www.hispecbrake.co.uk/UL4PRIN.html - have a look at the princess lug options. They also do rotors. Anyway, I didn’t get any further along the process but they do have full dimensions on the site.

HTH

Cheers

Kev

Update – Hummm, last post wont appear??? - aha, wont accept html??...

there also http://www.british-cars.net/mgb-gt-v8-t ... 512033.htm - this thread which may be of use?

Welding to high carbon high tensile bolts will end in tears - do not even attempt it. Find another method to secure the washers.

Hey Rathcoole,

I have looked into those princess calipers. i even considered the princess discs as they will bolt on. But yes, they are hard to get now, especially in Aus.

I've also seen those hi-spec calipers, which look nice, however, when you google people who have used them there are far too many bad stories for my liking.

My current thinking is using metro vented discs, not sure what calipers yet though.

And awdmoke. All the factory suspension bolts with the offset washer I have seen have it welded on. What are they doing differently to make it work?

Don't worry, I'll run it by the engineer first anyway, but it must be possible.

Cheers guys

Is it really almost a year since I last did anything to this car!!!!

Mananged to find a little time on cup day to break out the welder and do a bit more to this repair. Here is proof. Not done yet but I now have a deadline to work to.
Image

My engineer is threatening to retire next year so I want to have it engineerable (if not bloody finished!!) by June 2013. I have also secured a much more spacious workshop so will be moving the car up to the new shed in the next few weeks hopefully.

Plan is to get all the rust repairs done ASAP and go from there.
