I am getting closer to organising the driveshafts for my Vtec conversion but think it might be best to change the outer cv's to something stronger. I want to do work to the motor in the years to come so I might as well get strong driveshafts and cv's now (do it properly first time.) I currently have Rover mini cv's and hubs.
I see Allspeed engineering do the HD cv's from a Vauxhall and matching shafts but as my subframe is home made the lengths may be different.

Anyway, the question I am trying to get to is.....what are people in OZ doing about their outer cv's? are people converting them to something stronger or not? If so the what too? Does another cv fit directly into the mini hub?

I think there's only one other CV thats a direct fit to a mini hub and thats ones from an Austin Maxi:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Austin-Maxi- ... 0783032993

They're visually bigger in the CV joint end than mini ones, but I'm not sure if the inner cage is still the same or also bigger.

I use allegro 1500 outers on race car. Yes they accept disc brake hub. Just fit within the hub structure and bigger cage assembly. I used maxi drive shafts cold welded to honda inners.
They did crack however and now I use billet shafts.
I would expect welded shafts will suffice on road car. Less grip level from road tyre.

Why not consider the ALLSPEED HD outer joint with HD shafts ? These will work fine with
your setup - but require some standard Honda shafts (or bits) to scavenge the boots and the tripod bearings with cup.

I have thought hard about these but there are two things stopping me at the moment.
1. The exchange rate is killing us right now
2. I would like the axle shafts too but my lengths may be different to theirs. Once I get the car back on its feet I will re assess.
Good driveshafts are important so I don't mind spending the money to do it once. Especially knowing that I will probably modify the engine down the track to gain more power.

One of the reasons why I asked the question is that I can get new driveshafts made for about $600 a pair so all I need to know is what strong outer CV's suit the mini hub or can be slightly modified to fit.

You could go the HD joints and then custom up the shafts ontop ? They are Vauxhall in era with a mini disc brake outer- wouldn't be hard to make something up to suit

Don't you mean Honda inner and Vauxhall outer?
Any ideas what Vauxhall it hey are from? Or Holden in Aus.

Unknown to me exactly but I was under the impression they're from 2.0 Astras or similar.
But you wouldn't buy one from Holden here and mod the end to suit the drive flange - that would cost a fortune!

I mean Mini outer (fits into the disc hub) and vauxhaull splines. The honda part is the end which sits in the cup/cage.
No idea of what its from - refer to this http://www.allspeedengineering.com/inde ... int-detail

True Harley. Don't you have the HD ones from Allspeed?

Yep that's the one I thought you meant. It's looks to be a Vauxhall CV that has been lathed to fit the mini hub. It can't be a mini CV with a Vauxhall ball bearing gear as the drive shafts are shorter for the HD version, 267mm vs 287mm for the Honda to mini shafts.
If I know what the HD cv's are from then I can get the shafts made locally for about $600 for complete new ones.

Yes I bought the HD CVs and shafts. Glad I did I would't have had them made locally and cheaper or better than what I ended up with so it was a good purchase. They're significantly bigger than mini ones!

I don't get why you need to know what they are exactly. Just buy some HD CVs and then give the inner and outer CVs to a shaft maker and tell him to make the shafts 267mm long and fit the supplied parts (give or take what your frame specifically needs). Thats how all of the GTI ones I had made were done.

Yeh good call. I might just do that. To buy the complete set up from Allspeed will be ridiculous now the exchange rate is crap. You purchased at the right time.

The more you can buy off the shelf the better I figure.
If I break one I'll have a newy from allspeed in a week!

Yeh your probably right. I have enough custom stuff already which will be annoying when any of it needs replacing. Hopefully a long time away.
I'd hope I didn't break a HD driveshaft though. The car won't be that powerful.

What he said. We both have a good point - it's expensive from ALLSPEED but it works. And it's only a week away from a pair !
