The gearbox on NAV that is the question

some here may know the idler gear bearing and or gear is dead in my g/box.
The g/box was smooth and never caught/ground teeth due to slow synchros, only operator error . It was just a bit difficult to get it into first, i would have to pull it into second then put it in first. Was this a warning sign of bad things to come?
I have four options

1) To replace the idler gear and bearing. How hard is it? Can it be done while still in the car? cost and availability of parts?

2) If i have to pull it out, while it's on the bench i could chuck in some new layshafts, bearings & selector forks etc etc? Couldn't hurt could it? +
I have never touched a g/box before so i'm a bit worried i could bugger it up good and proper.

3) Go with a good low km used example from another source a+ maybe?

4) Tow it to a mini mechanic and bend over and take it up the ...............

All advice and directions greatly appreciated in advance.
I need my mini back, driving the commonwhore just doesn't do it for me, and thats when i can get my hands on it

1. Can't be done in the car. No room to slide the flywheel housing off.
2. Sure if you have the right tools and a decent manual, or a mate who's done it before.
3. Possibility, but how do you know it's ant good?
4. Yeah you could, but get quotes..

I'd pull the box out, then decide- if you do get a mechanic to do it up at least they can see what they are quoting on.

Nav,,,if you havn`t done it before (a gearbox rebuild that is) then i`d start the "bend over" process now

it won`t hurt (much)

hard to get into first is probly worn first gear syncro teeth, lost their sharp entry angles , not too much of a problem really

as the good Doc says, the idler is not something you want to try to fix in the car,,,& i`d be doing a full rebuild , just to make sure it`s all good & also to get all that metal grindings out of the box



sorry mate , but it`s a big job & you won`t want to have to do it again , would you???

Correct me if I am wrong but you can buy a reconditioned gearbox from some place in Sydney for about $800 choice of rod/remote and includes diff choice of pot/uni. Does this sound right?

Practically every 2nd mini does this. Lillee is the same. Not always is it hard to do this but sometimes I have to put it into 2nd then 1st. I don't think this is a problem, just sloppiness in the shifter mechanism?

Ok ther verdict is in and the idler gear shaft, bearing and my cover are all toast.







Alot more filings than usual!


anyone know if the covers & idler gears are compatible between rod and remote change boxes? cause i got 2 remote boxes i can raid for bits

Unfortunately the crane is not mine. I ended up having to borrow one from my mate's fiancee's dad. The one i "bought" was going to be 4-6 weeks after i was told it'll be here in 2 days which is why i bought it. There seems to be a shortage of sub 2ton engine cranes in brisbane atm.

P.s. Whats involved in removing the bearing in the transmission case for the idler gear?
