I know this topic is very "depends on what you're engine setup is..." but could some one give me a baseline starting needle to work from.

My 1275 is fairly stock, no head mods, mild cam, water heated manifold , LCB's through standard exhaust setup. Airfilter would be ramflo with unifilter foam pad.

Anyone give me a B needle spec for that that would get me started?? HIF was originally from MG Metro...

Contacted SU Midel but they haven't got back to me yet...

OK DOnt listen to mason he is giving the wrong advice here a std metro economy needle is a BER, the MG metro came out with a BDL the letter needle will get you really close to waht you want if the motor is all standard.

It's on the needle's parallel bit inside the piston. Take it out to check.

OK, so I pulled the needle out and it is a BER ?? How does that stack up against my fairly standard 1275 setup??

In what way? They agreed the BRE would be the standard (economy) needle, and that's what is in the car. Cranky has suggested a BDL as it's a bit richer further up the scale.

As I haven't fitted the carby to the motor yet my question still stands. The needle turns out to be BER is it close baseline to get the car running reasonably or would something like the BDL be closer??

I don't know about which of the needles would be better, but I have found that if you get one reasonably close then just richen it up a bit it helps get rid of the flat-spots - should be driveable anyway.

You should not run it extra rich for long periods of time though, because the extra fuel tends to wash the oil off the cylinder walls and increase the rate of wear. It is also bad for the environment. Still better than running it lean though :)

If a BER is what you have then I would just go with that and richen it if necessary as a temporary setup. Then you can find out roughly where the flatspots are and which areas of the needle need more fueling and go from there. I wouldn't drive it for long on this needle if it isn't working properly though because it may be running lean at certain speeds and you could damage the engine (burn valves) if it is lean enough.

A useful site for selecting and comparing needles is http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/
