hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had used a head of a different engine on the mini engine, appart from the obvious ones?. Maybe a different pushrod 4cyl, a cut down 6cyl, a bank from a V8, a single overhead cam variant. In theory there could be a lot of options. Someone must have tried something(obvious alternatives excluded) else during the 50odd years this motors been around. Just thinking out loud is all, anyone else got any ideas?

cheers

There are BMW heads, Elder 8-Port Heads and 7-Port Heads + Other Cross Flows.

One of the Datsun Motor's lines up but the pushrods are on the wrong side..

There is also the KAD16V head..

What more do you want?

<edit> it's the A12 head (Datsun)

It's a myth that the A12 Datsun head fits. Folklore....

I've got a Fiat 124 Sport/125 twincam head, bore spacing is nowhere near right...
I've heard a Fiat Punto one goes closer.....

Jack Knight 16v head.

Hmm might have to measure to Rover V8 sometime. 1/2 of 3500cc is 1750. There was a Triumph 1750cc engine but I'm not sure if it's anything like half a Rover.

Triumph Dolomite Sprint? Fancy, Coventry CLimax cylinder head, so I've read. Now that on a mini would be cool, or the motor turned sideways on a mini gearbox! 8)

The Rover V8 was designed by GM as a Buick and Oldsmobile engine (there are differences between them) It had nothing to do with any other BMC/Triumph/Leyland/Rover engine.

I don't think that the Dolomite Sprint engine had anything to do with Coventry Climax. (The Hillman Imp engine was based on a Coventry Climax engine)

As far as I know the only heads that will bolt straight onto an A series engine are A series heads. (The BMW head will not bolt straight on)

I forgot about that. But I was thinking along the lines of bases a motor upon half a V8, who knows..

I was thinking of the Stag which has two smaller Triumph motors joined together.

As for coventry climax, i searched the internet and couldn't find any info, hmm I read it in a magazine. Just cars, or something in an article on the Triumph Dolomite it said "the whizz bang 16 valve Conventry Climax head". BUt from some quick research it appear 'Spen King' worked on the engineering of the vehicle.

this is the kind of discussion I was talking about. How about the datsun head with the pushrods on the wrong side, why cant you turn it around? you could fit unleaded seats in the inlet ports?

What about drilling holes for the push rods?

The is a huge range of jap twin cam heads that MIGHT come close to suiting a mini. Might. These jap 4 bangers, would be 5 bearing motors, which would probable mean the crank is longer (to fit the bearing between cylinders) meaing they won't come clsoe to fitting!
