i pulled apart my PCV/Breather/Smiths valve (also in "shudder and die out" thread)

i thought i had a piece that was the size of a 10c piece with a 4mm notch coming out of it

right now ive got: back plate, rubber, spring, cone, hoses.
is there supposed to be a metal part between the rubber and spring

im usually not likely to lose parts, now i cant find it and the engine is running horribly.

is there supposed to be a piece as i have described in the valve?
i bought a new rubber diaphragm ($7.50) and i think ive lost a piece.

i hate to admit it, but im crying on the inside, on holidays, gotta get compulsory work experience, no family car, eastern creek on sunday, mum's bike P's on monday, gotta fix the mini, how do you deal with all this shite?

Yes there's a metal bit in the middle under the diaphragm- it's the VALVE... and sits in the hole in the middle of the alloy body.
