Just wondering if spacers are really required on my twin 1.5" SU's and if they required what is their purpose.

If you don’t have them then normally the throttle linkage hits the manifold. You need them to make the right distance between the carb, heat shield and manifold

My SPO 41 police S came with a pair of those spacers on each carburettor, which as timmy201 said, was needed to clear the throttle linkage from the heat shield.

The heat shield was a single plate on police Ss, so the throttle linkage would definitely hit the shield without using at least 1 spacer. The gap between the usual 2-piece heat shield allows a bit more room for the throttle linkage to operate.

You will have to trial fit the carbs to see whether you need a spacer. Even the twin HS2 setup uses a spacer to set the carbs off the manifold.

looks like the thiner HS2 type.

My HS4s came with a thicker phenolic (black) spacers.

Cheers, Ian

Thank you for your remarks. I searched the web and it said the spacers were used for cooling the fuel on it's way passed the exhaust pipes.

The problem I have is that the accelerator cable has a bent passage to the carby connector so I thought I take out the spacers the path would be a little straighter.

The throttle cable bracket looks a little wonky, I think it should point a bit to the side. It’s also hard to tell if the middle part of the linkage is around the right way

Alloy spacers will provide no cooling benefit. If you want to keep them cool you’ll need phenolic spacers

Mini Inlet Manifold SU Studs DSCF1591 (1).JPG
Have decided to remove spacers.
I now need to shorten the 4 stud bolts.

Is there a good wat to do this?

Have you checked that all the linkages will work properly without the spacers? The fuel bowls will also get closer to the heat shields

I think you need to find the real problem and not remove the spacers. They were fitted for a reason & they should work.

Maybe the carbies were not for a Mini, Could they be from another type of car and bodged to go on a Mini?

If they were off something else eg a Sprite, only the float bowl angle would be different. HS2 carb bodies are all the same shape. Just LH or RH variation.

Agree.
Have wondered if the spacers were to lengthen the inlet port to help create a swirl effect. The HS type carburettors were shorter in length than the earlier H series and the spacers may have been meant to compensate for this.

Do the spacers go before heat shield or after heat shield?
