Hello - Can anyone tell me if the above model Mini Cooper had an air box fitted to the twin 1 1/2 SU carbs or no air box as shown in the attached photo? Cheers

The 1.5” carbs weren’t fitted until 1970 with SPO41. Earlier police spec cars had the standard HS2 carbs

When they were fitted, the 1.5” carbs were fitted with Ramflo filters like you’ve got there

Until August 1970 all Cooper S supplied to NSW Police were stock standard showroom models from a performance perspective, so Mark 1's like yours had the normal air cleaner with 1 1/4"SU's.

Can I suggest you avoid using foam filters unless they are using oil in the foam to help trap dust. The early Ramflo filters, including the set-up on SPO41 police cars, used the foam dry.
I ruined 2 motors over a few years due to grit/dust getting in. Changed back to paper filters years ago.

Completely agree Bill. So called performance filters are a total waste of time. Not to mention the poor filtration.
Paper filters are by far a better product and the standard filter housings are also the way to go.

I’ve found the modern foam elements from unifilter have been really good. They come pre oiled and there’s no sign of anything getting through them

If you mean the green sock type of Unifilter with oil, I understand they are excellent - don't have experience of them, though.

I am concerned that the Ramflo filters that were fitted to police Ss and were meant to be washed out and used dry are the same as the current Ramflo offering. There is a website for Ramflo that offers replacement foam filter elements, but I can't find any reference to oil being used with the foam.

I am concerned that some people, used to modern cars, don't understand what goes into supplying clean air to an engine.

If using HS2 (1 1/4 inch) standard Cooper S SUs, use the standard air box and filters.

These are from the last year or so. They are ramflo compatible and a straight swap

So does that mean that you use the standard Ramflo foam element and place an oiled cover over it, and run the 2 together?

No the unifilter oiled foam element replaces the ramflo foam. I’ve been running one on my Dellorto and a pair on HS2 and there’s been no sign of anything making it through the filter

This is on the side of the Ram Flo Filter Box.
