Gday all - I need some advice from thhose wiley in the ways. I redid the head gasket in the mini as there was more foam in the top of the motor than my twins bubble bath. I replaced all hoses and bolts as well and whanged everything down. Started first go and I bumbled on my merry way. After 100km I retigtened all bolts but as I removed the Rocker cover there was still a light smearing of mayo in the cover. I again wiped it and proceeded to reinstall the cover.

I changed the oil with a cheap woolies 20W-50 and a cheapo filter. Drove for another 100 km and dumped the oil again and replaced said oil filter with a valvoline VO 22. I again noticed mayo in the rocker cover.

I have a test kit at home(thanks pussers!!)used to test for water in hydrocarbons and tested said oil now sitting in oil tray - not a trace!! To make sure kit accurate I put 50 ml water into the waste oil - kit went beserk!!

Where is this coming from?? I had head crack tested with nil cracks - is it the cold(very cold) weather down here. Is it the HPR 30 (20W-60)oil i am using. Can anyone shed some light for me and a way ahead??

Ta in advance

Cold weather and cool thermostat is my guess.
Every litre of petrol burnt creates 1.25L of water in the form of vapour. Some gets past the rings. Water vapour condenses in the cold motor. :x
If motor was hotter it would vapourise.
What thermostat is in it? If a 74C, might be worth getting an 82C or 88C for cool climates..

As I understand, if it's very cold, then condensation doesn't get a chance to burn off properly and instead mixes with the oil in the rocker cover. My old Mini used to do it in winter but not in summer.

My car gets mayo in the rocker cover when it is used for lots of short trips. The heater is only just starting to kick in when I get to work. The low temps down here don't help either! (-2?c this week)

If it does not get hot it can't evaporate the water vapour.
Take it for a drive up a freeway and then look in the rocker cover.

Is the PCV hooked up and working properly? This helps to reduce the problem.

No I don't. Most of it goes down the tailpipe... 8)
