Crank Movement???

How much end float for a crank in a 1275.

I have been thinking that I had a clutch problem as every time i Pushed in my clutch I had a scraping noise like as if the clutch was disengaged properly. When I was look at it on the weekend Dad was there and he said that it soulded like it was from the other end that was rubbing.

On further inspection we found that the crank was moving to the front of the engine and then rubbing on the radiator shroud and cause the rubbing noise. I have not measuer the amount of movement or the gap between the harmonic balancer and the radiator shroud.

Standard endfloat on a 1275 is about .003". Any more than .010-.012" I'd pull the motor... if you let it get real loose, the thrust washers can fall out...
Put a dial gauge on the end of the balancer then pry it to & fro- see what end float you've got.

Thanks I will check for that. It has only done 35 000km since rebuild and it very rearly goes past 5000 rpm

if the crank thrust washers have been put in the wrong way round, then they don`t last very long at all & the crank will happilly grind away your main cap & block ,,,YUKKY!!!!!!!!!!

I`d pull it out if it`s travelling that far

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.

I has been doing it fot eh last 6 - 8 months and is slowly getting worse I think a engine removal will be in store for the old girl and then it will be a complete strip down of the body as well.

I have measure roughly the gape between the Rad shroud and the flywheel and 0.025" feeler gauge will slide nicely through so I think a engine removal will be in place. I will have to set up a dail gauge to check it properly first.

as matt says you might have 1 of the thrusts in the wrong way and it has caused it to wear out either the crank or centre main cap.
I hope its not too bad but i would definatly pull the motor out and have a strip down.
I have had end float problems before and all of them have been terminal within 100km so i hope its not too bad for you.
