It won't go too far in, it will go as far as it can then stop. Just make sure that when you put it on that that you spin it a few times so that it settles sits flush in the seal. last thing you want is to have a dirty great oil leak. Are you starting it on the floor?

My 2c worth, as told to me by the great learned one! - put the pulley on and spin it before you fully tighten the timing chain cover bolts so it sits square. I'm sure that's what aaron meant, but he didn't imply that specifically and yes I work in quality assurance!
