They are allowed to in NSW. There was a big blue in Wollongong about that as people were forced to walk on the road to get around the camera car. While it is legal for them to park on footpaths etc they take more care these days I believe.

I am a professional driver and have had one offence in 20 years, no exscuses offered, I was speeding and got done for it. I am very careful as no license means no living. It is that simple.

Chris, I have been aught by a camera once in 10 years (65 in a 60zone - 20 meteres after the exact same road goes from 70 - 60) So i have no sour grapes.

Thommo, I dont think most people would say the Police do not do teh best job possible with the resources given to them. People having a go at Speed cameras are not having a go at the police and they certainly do not condone speeding ot unsafe driving. I would live to see more HP Police on the roads and if I got pulled over for speeding by a HP officer - fair cop and stupid me for breaking the law. BUT, speeding camears are not designed to save lives, they are designed to stop people exceeding the speed linit of a 50 mtere stretch of road. Usually where the speed limit is a lit lower than what most would consider a safe speed for that road.

Here in WA, unmarked police cars are white Holden Commodores with steelies instead of mags. As far as signage goes, having a sign before a camera is stupid. In WA, there is always a bright neon yellow sign saying "thank you for driving within the speed limit" about 20 metres AFTER you passed the camera (though, if it's a long stretch of road, you can often see these bright signs from a fair distance, just depending on where it's placed).

I got done doing 70 on a stretch of 60 (my one and only offence). I don't know how speeding fines work in other states, but doing 70 in a 60 zone is $100 fine and 1 demerit point. If I was doing 69 however, it would have been $50 and no demerits. Also, if I was doing 79, it would have also been $50 and 1 demerit point.

I think it's silly to have the brackets (60-69, 70-79 etc) as far as penalties go. It gives the impression that doing 79 is as safe as doing 70, and that doing 70 is WAY more dangerous than doing 69. You should get penalised per kilometre you are caught doing over the speed limit. It would be more fair that way, and more logical, IMO.

Watch Those lines on your log book makka !
Ive been stung $330 in the past because the line I drew was in the wrong spot.

We are all against idiotic and erractic speeding on the roads but where is the sense in someone being booked 2am in the morning doing 86km in an 80km zone on a empty dual lane highway :x

I ahve been done for speeding a few times, enough to ahve had vicroads send me the letter with the double or nothing law.

i think that the only way to get people to stop speeding is to have (marked) speed cameras everywhere. you cant say these will be revenue raisers as i know i slow donw when i know there is a speed camera about. i'm keeping the speed down anyway.

maybe to combat the whole revenue raising thing it would be good to either see the money from fines (what are the latest figures on the amount of revenue collected???) go into better toads (although most of our roads are pretty decent) or into some kind of free driver educaton, instead of flashy cop cars designed to be able to catch speeders.

or, in addition to the revenue thing, maybe less dollars but more points???

also some of the techniques are pretty sneaky. cameras everywhere, marked, would stop people from speeding

in regards to people spending alot of time on the road, well if its your job maybe there should be some special system, but on the other hand if you spend so much time on the road maybe you should know better??? if you just drive alot well thats your choice and you shoudnt get extra points for that
