There seems to be a bit of "will it clear or what won't it clear". I am building a 1430 so it had better work. Why won't it work in a 3 synch box? Not that it concerns me but others may like to know the answer. What it does is to stop the spinning gears throwing the oil into the crankcase and up to the underneath the piston crowns. Iit is estimated that there is about a litre of oil suspended in the air above the gearbox at any one time so this is a real issue. This oil fog has been proved in V8's to cause HP loss. The name WINDAGE tray came from the fact that in V8's the air disturbance from the rotating crank picks up the oil and gets it airborn forming a fog and lowering the usable oil level in the sump. With the MIini it is misnamed as what happens is the rotating gears throw the oil up into the motor, but it is a generic name which everyone knows and the overall effect is a higher level of usable oil in the sump which is a good thing. With one installed it may not even be necessary to run a centre oil pickup but I do not know if anyone has bothered to experiment. A lot of the guys in the States who use them have found they can run the oil on the min mark with no problems at all. I suspect it might also have a positive effect in minimising oil leaks but have no proof of that. Some guys have also noticed that their oil temps come down substantially. This will be due to the oil not reaching the underneath of the piston crown and cooling the piston, which is a bit of a bummer but we can't have our cake and eat it unfortunately.

I've put a post on MM tonite asking WHY it won't work in a 3 synchro... :?: Apart from the different oil pipe shape & some trimming I can't see why not..

I spoke to keith last night in between his bust schedule and he is expecting his back within the week so its onwards and upwards from there.
I also run a 1430 on 1275 A+ rods so i hope there is no clearance problems there as they are wider then the S ones that everyone would normally use for a 1430.

I suppose its a matter of experimenting with it to see if and what it clears.

keith calls it an ashan gearbox or whether that is the name of his customer im not sure.

OK I spoke at length with GR this morning.
Says there is a lot of hype around them...
Yes, people run do them in Nb cars with 3 synchro boxes.
No he has never seen any extra power in a mini, on the engine dyno.
Yes they work in V8s. He reckons pretty much a waste of time in a Mini..
main benefit is they keep broken pistons & rods out of the gearbox...
