I think a lot of this trouble is fuel fouling due to cold running plugs- people fit the so-called `recommended grade' of plugs to motors that often have been modded over the years, are running newer fuels and in traffic that's often slower than yesteryear.
Conventional wisdom (plug books) says fit an N9Y(C) or equivalent to evey A series out there. But, way back then, these plugs were confined to the Cooper S and later the other 1275s. Everything else got an N5.... (a standard reach plug, not projected nose).
My point here is people wonder why the N9Ys etc foul up in slow city driving, then they go fit another the same.
I have a friend with a 1220 Morrie and twin HS2s that does this all the time.
Maybe, for this sort of use, they should consider a hotter plug- N11Y or N12Y or equivalents in NGK-Bosch etc.
BTW GR agrees, he reckons N9Ys are too cold for a roadie motor running a sidedraft Weber....
