Howdy pardners. I only recently discovered AUSMIN & I'm happy to join. I've found it both informative & amusing as I get to know the different personalities that use the forum. Those with knowledge & those that think they do! (chuckle to myself) But thats what its all about learning from each other, which brings me to my question. A few years ago i picked up a nos AEA 649 factory race cam commonly known as a 648 cam. has any body used one of these? how do they perform? are they too wild for a road going cooper s? any feed back would be appreciated and in return i will try & share my limited knowledge or 2 cents worth when i can. regards the "SHERIFF" :D

I put one in my Mk1 Cooper 'S' when I was a lad. It ran three into one race extracters and twin 1.5 SUs. This was a real pig. The engine had sweet FA down low. Too wild for the road.

Too many better cams available nowadays. Sell your cam and move on.

from Feralsprint talking about the recent passing of Barry Jones..

"That is really sad news, the guy was a great engine builder as well as a
hell of a nice bloke, he ground up a cam years ago that Waldo ran in his 5
port super mini motor, it was the fastest 5 port in NSW and when Waldo went 8 port he gave me the cam it was a ripper, much better than the works 648 full race but he could never remember what grind and lift he designed."

RIP...Barry Jones

forgot to add, you need a super close gearbox.

You'd need to scream the tits off it in each gear to keep it in the sweet rev range.

It was the best cam in its day for race applications. Modern cams with scatter patterns allow a better spread of power and are more drivable down lower in the rev range. The 648 produces excellent power from 6000 upwards and is useable from 4000. Mine wouldn't drive under 3500 so was hopeless as a road car. I also found that it was more tractable with a pair of 1.5" SUs, than with a Weber.

Gday Sherriff - welcome to the site. Just a quick question. I spend a bit of time down in the Nowra area(Creswell and Albatross mainly)and last Friday we saw a white clubby tearing up the Princes highway on our way back to Canberra early Friday morning...had a really nice centre mount muffler too...

Welkommen mein herr
