hi everyone,
i was just watching mtv's "pimp my ride" show and they did up a girls honda civic. So what i hear you say, well they installed "lamborghini doors" via a hinge setup that can be bought and fitted with very minor body mods. The door opens about 30cm like normal (outwards) then goes vertical, like a lambo. It got me thinking, so now im gonna do some internet research and see what i can come up with. Id love to have a lambo doored mini!!!

see ya

trent

I was a judge at Autosalon in Adelaide the other week, so i managed to get a good CLOSE UP of these mechanisms....

The door itself is only held on with one hinge instead of 2, and feels extremely flimsy when opening.... if you opened it in a strong breeze it may bend the lifting arm.... but the door does feel light to lift - it must have some kind of counterweight or gas strut hidden behind the front guard.

All the original catch and latch devices are retained, so the door IS secure when closed.

Getting into the car itself is very awkward, as you need to actually climb UNDER the door to get in and out... and thats in a big car like a civic!!!

This mod could definitely work on late model english minis, the type with internal hinges, but i am pretty certain you couldn't use the same device on an externally hinged car...

Oh, and i dont think it would pass on a roadworthy certificate either....

Okay, here's what i found.....

The scissor door kits are not the cheap little mod you may have thought they were.... :?

Firstly, they need to be the one thats designed to suit the vehicle in question, as its NOT a "1 make fits all" situation..... or so they say....

The doors open 15 degrees outwards, then 50 degrees upwards, and are held up by gas struts behind the inner guard.

This is one of the cars that was at Adelaide Autosalon, i did some judging on it and had a good close look. Its an EK Civic Hatch with a 2002 Integra front end and scissor doors. It was a display car for VIVA GARAGE..... and it did get a trophy too 8)

Here's the best bit ----- ithe scissor kit costs only $1800  So start saving, kiddies!!!

I'd like to see 'Gull-wing' doors on a Mini - they would be practical but the roof probably wouldn't take it

Gull wing doors on a mini??? Gee, you must be pretty short then!! You would want the doors to flip 180 degrees upwards maybe....

The only way to get away with it is with a "targa top" style of conversion, the T-Bar roof, ... which is what i think you are already referring to..

I think just having the removable roof panels (eg: Fast and Furious Supra) on a mini would be WAY COOL too  8)
