my old chem teacher said all you need to do is make up a small box and attach it to the chassis, fill it with cotton wool soaked in salt water and place some magnesium or i guess zinc(easier to get i think) in there and seal it up. Just replace it about every 10 yrs. Magnesium will corrode instead of your mini

i did high school chem
still thinking about it...
the salt water would allow transfer of electrons from the Magnesium to the Iron
if Iron decides to corrode

Zinc would be a better option

Why I started this thread in the first place is I have to rust proof my new van shell. It is in primer and has light surface rust on the roof. I want to use something that is going to penetrate into the weld seams etc. I would really like to avoid getting it blasted back to the metal as I do not think doing that will be an advantage. All the rust in minis seems to start at the weld seams and getting it back to bare metal won't have much effect on that. So I guess I need something that will penentrate into these areas. Suggestions?

How will it do so if it is not uncovered first and treated unless you try any of the other idea's :?

All the metal in the welded seams is bare, it is only what you can see that is painted. The welding starts the corrosion process and this is why all manufacturers dip their bodies or use special steels these days. When Zetland was going all the bodies were roto dipped and BMC was the only company in Oz that did it. For all their efforts it was only a paint dip if I recall correctly and not a real success. So if a rust proofing can penentrate the welded seams it should at the least inhibit the rusting process. This being a new shell I would like to be able to say that I have at least tried to stop rust forming.

you could always spray some fish oil or something on the other side of the weld. Or sometimes you can solder in the joints them selves to fill them.
