Just hazarding a guess here but.....

"Cane Toad river" = creek infested with large non-native anphibians
"crossing the road" = shallow creek crossing enabling vehicular access to opposite bank
"up near the Sugar Refinery" = a general bearing indicator relative to the nearest inhabitants
"the Mini stunk to high heaven" = cross the creek, strike numerous non-native anphibians, compress anphibian carcases under trusty 10" mags, squish contents of anphibian carcases into the wheel arches and running gear, sample the aroma.
"two consecutive 360s" = re-cross creek, then go over and back one more time for the fun of it.
"by the time I got to Brisbane" = Allow anphibian guts to ferment in the sun for several hours to highlight the aroma.

No creek, just Cane Toads all across the road in pouring rain, for 400 yards (in the old money!)

"crossing the road" = shallow creek crossing enabling vehicular access to opposite bank

I was honking along and came around a long sweeper and ploughed into this seething mass of amphibians!!! No brakes, just tried to pad across them to slow down....but round and around she went....thankfully not another soul around.

"up near the Sugar Refinery" = a general bearing indicator relative to the nearest inhabitants

Hmmmm, on the left hand side of the road, by a river, low lying area, up between Grafton and McLean used have Cane Trains beside the road and a big Sugar Factory

"the Mini stunk to high heaven" = cross the creek, strike numerous non-native amphibians, compress amphibian carcases under trusty 10" mags,

Sadly no mags, just 5" widies with Michelin XZXs (hmmmm...me like)

squish contents of anphibian carcases into the wheel arches and running gear, sample the aroma.

Yuk!! I can still smell em!! :?

"two consecutive 360s" = re-cross creek, then go over and back one more time for the fun of it.

Nope....proceeding in slight curve, phhtt, phhhtt and end up on the side of the road surrounded by amphibians!!

"by the time I got to Brisbane" = Allow anphibian guts to ferment in the sun for several hours to highlight the aroma.

Ohhhh yeah, cleared all the rain and the little buggers started baking on underneath :(

Roads were indeed a challenge. I was in the army in Melbourne and drove regularly Sydney to Melbourne in a Mk 2 Cortina that I had to keep a spare generator and brackets in the boot for as it broke the brackets and seized the generator regularly. The only two lane bits in NSW on the Hume Highway were north of Albury and North of Goulburn. The overnight parcel trucks used to run in the high 80MPH to low 90MPH as a rule on the longer straights like the Breadalbane Plains. As a youngster I can recall dad taking us to Melbourne down the coast road from Sydney and from Eden down to the first major town in VIC the road was dirt! This was the Princes Highway in the Fifties. People today find this hard to believe.

Yep....reminds me of some Navy people (4-5) I know who used to jump (well cram!) into an 850 on Friday arvo, 10 hours later have whats left of the weekend in Sydney then all jump back in to be back at work on Monday. Didn't do it every weekend but enough for uit to be regular!!

Now that dedication!! :D
