Can't comment on the remote change as I've never had one, but if you have a rod change I agree with Big willy It makes a big difference.

So does getting a hacksaw and cutting a few inches off the stick..
My son's car has this done, and it's the best rodchange shift I've driven!
Cost= SFA... :wink:

I fiited a KAD quickshift to my remote box. It was easy apart from the locating pin for the gear lever being too big for the threaded hole in the KAD spacer. A new locating pin does not come with the kit. I had to make my own.

I like the feel of the shorter shifts and the new longer and swept back gear lever is easier to reach with seat adjuster brackets installed. It found it also improved gear stick rattle a little but did not cure it totally. Definatley takes a little getting used to. I got mine sent from Avonbar and it wasdelivered for about half the price on ones I have seen here. All in all I am happy with it.

A trick I did on another (not a mini) car was just to bend the lever. I couldn't believe the difference it made. I didn't even have to pull it out. Heat and bend in the car.

Yeah i agree with the Doc, i have a DOC prepared spring and it made a big difference, but i also have the KAD qik shift (remote type) and its not too bad, takes time to get used to and when going hard it can be tricky to get third and also has a tendency to stick in reverse but it is not a bad conversion for the price i paid (nix).

The spring I fit when asked is a 3/8" x 1-1/2" BLUE die spring (a 3" one, cut in half so I get 2)
The one in my car (and Gafmo's) is a 3/8" x 1-1/2" RED die spring. These are stronger but need more work to fit, as the hole in the spring is smaller & won't fit over the step on the lockout plunger. Grind the plunger a little so it fits... 8)

These springs can be bought from Automatic Springs in Sydney, or go see your favourite toolmaker.. :)

Does shortening the gearstick affect roadworthiness or count as a mod on a car?
I've got like 10 inches of throw between 3rd n 4th.

Something seriously wrong there- if it's a rod change I'd suspect the bush in the front of the gearshift's steady bar. The rubber self destructs when it gets oily- good idea on a Mini, hey! :x
A lurethane or nylon bush works nice, even a steel one will do. No, you can't buy them- make something up!

i can personally vouch for this..

going from my deluxe with lovely straight tight gearchanges to a clubby with rod change took a long long time to get used to... i still dont always bang the changes perfectly :(

but yeah now i use a hacksaw'd gear stick its not quite as good as the remote style, but its damn well the best rod change i've driven, even if you need longer arms.

How do you reach the gearstick without having to lean forward for every change? I couldn't in mine but I do have the seat set way back and steering column and seat adjuster brackets fitted. I guess it would be no good for tall guys.

The "choppped gearstick" modification is illegal in South Australia....... only IF you get caught

Why not do the KAD short shift kit, with an EXTENDED gear lever (eg euro super tourers) , so you dont have to reach far from the steering wheel....
