I have been gettin dirty, degreasing and wire wheeling my motor and box today.

While doing all this, I noticed a large split pin hanging out of the drain hole, at the bottom of the clutch housing..... :shock:

What would this have come off? Maybe this explains why I could never find gears when driving it.... :lol:

Its supposed to be there.... it assists in draining any fluids that may make their way in there....

Same as if you tip a glass, the water doesnt come out immediatley if there is only a drop.
add a straw to the side... bingo - instant drippage....

Put a shin new one in there or just leave it, but please have on in there !!

yep it is supposed to be there. It's to allow stuff out whilst keeping big things out. One of my resto manuals makes a big deal about putting it back in. So if the book says, the reader should do.

yep... us oldtimers have seen plenty of splitties hanging outa stuff dont think you see it much these days.. nothings supposed to drip out LOL

have you ever seen a big splitty with stuff dripping out LOL

If you have a hole with a bit of oil dripping out of it you will get dirt building up by sticking to the oil, so you need the pin to wiggle around to keep the hole clean!

You need the pin in there, to rattle around and get belted by the ring gear teeth on jumps- makes you say " WTF wazzat??" :lol:
2 of mine have it, the other doesn't. Doesn't matter, IMO. :wink:

Pulled flywheel off 1098 today followed by said housing. Found hole you're all talking about which surprised me enough, but no split pin.

If you've got oil dripping out and down the split pin, you've got bigger problems to worry about than a split pin. The clutch will probably be slipping too as it will be covered in oil and it's a motor out scenario to replace primary gear oil seal!

Nah.. you can do it in the car, not fun but is possible with the right tools. :wink:

I once drove my Mini back from Wakefield Pk with the clutch full of oil, after a starter tooth let go, got belted around in there and broke the PCV vent in top of flywheel housing.
Guess what... the clutch didn't slip! Very strange... :roll:

Maybe if you keep the revs up you can keep the oil off the clutch by centrifugal force :D

I got caught out by that one as well..Under the car reassembling the rod change..went something like "huh, what's this?...ummm....that can't be good..*Ring Dr.*..."Oh it's supposed to be like that?!..oh..okay then..*scratches head and lets out sigh of relief* 8)
