A 295 head is good, for a 998 or 1098, but ultimately not as good for power as a 940. I've ported both, as well as 202s and a 1316.
<edit> to run a 940 on a small bore, you need to notch the top of the block to clear the exhaust valves. Unless it has worn valve seats and a stock cam- but who wants that?

295s tend to crack more too- their design was based on the early S heads. Most racing 998s in UK now use a 940 head, but out here (different class) they still run a race ported 295 or 202. Graham Russell has been doing race 202 heads for a while now, his dyno says they are just as good as a 295, after a bit of work.

DRmini how much for the 940's

and how much work is involved in notching the block? (work=$$) is that to clear the way for larger valves?
would notching drop the Cr and therefore require a skim to up the Cr a bit.

(just trying to be more lernhed) ;)

Michael

Price of a 940 depends... on lots of things- whether complete or not, modified or not, whether has got all new valves, guides, springs etc.
Anywhere from $150 or so for a bare head, on up.
Ping `kazjim', he has a few for sale cheap, that need doing up. 8)
