its not the size of the wheels its the overall gearing that matters. gear ratios, final drive, whell size+tire profile (=overall rolling diameter) are what matters.
i have had plenty of fun with 850,998,1098 engines. i'm yet to own a 1275 but i have driven a moke with one that was absolutely awesome.
the biggest advantage you have is the engine is already there. use it and then you can build a killer 1275 while you are driving the 998. then when your 1275 breaks you have a spare engine to use
