Go the discs, dude. I am on my third mini now, and ONLY because i paid $600 for the last car has it not had $1000-1500 spent on discs for it.

I dunno what willy is on about- $1995 for 7.5" (Cooper S) discs? Dream on, buddy. Steve (Brickworx) can sell 'em for about $1200-1500 (or less) for a set of good second-hand items. Larger 'S' CV joints, complete Uprights and all that is needed. How can MiniSport want $2000 for a set and be called 'reasonable'... Now I know why the guy who owns MiniSport drives a Honda NSX to work everyday (and two 500SL Mercedes, and an ex-wife, and...and...

You can get the larger 8.4" rover discs for about $800, but you will need 12" wheels to clear the larger disc/caliper setup.

As far as installation time - I did a conversion (on an 850 panel van) In the shed at home in an afternoon by myself... Easy. You'll never look back.

I hate dums :D

Constantly adjusting them, they heat up quick, sucessive stops get worse and worse...remind me never to do the gorge again with dums

Yes, drums will stop almost as well as S disks FIRST go..but try stopping again fairly soon after a hard/emergency stop..your braking distance grows rapidly from the fade..

Go disks if you think you need them, it will matter on your driving style, if your going to throw your car around then get discs, otherwise drums are fine for sedate use, personally i'd go disks..even a set of 7" cooper discs are better, at least they're always adjusted ;)

And the more power you have, the higher your average speed will be, and don't anyone think you won't use the power if you have it...

Before you spend big money and if you don't mind adjusting your own brakes as it can take some getting used to making sure they are propery done and you have a hard firm peddle put a booster in.

The difference will have you learning to drive your car again as not to throw yourself through the windscreen and you'll forget all about spending the big bucks.

QUOTE"The 7" discs are in fact on par, if not worse, than the twin leading shoe drums due to the minute surface area and very very inferior pad surface area"UNQUOTE(I think there is a gerometry thing there too - will check The Wizard SV book for that one). This was quoted by Mr Calver The mini Mag he writes for. I think they look the part on a period car, but have no right on a road car - waaayyyy too vague for my liking(and I think a lot would agree - makes the freckle pucker let me tell you!!)

Stick with the drums...spend the $2k on something else

My opinion only but if you speed, the best brakes in the world cant stop you getting a fine(or worse - DEAD!!)

Coming from one who lost family to speeding

I didn't mean they stopped better but because they're always adjusted i'd say they would stop better than alot of the twin-leading shoe drums out there that aren't taken care of..

Ahhhso - I personally hate doing the adjustment of the bloody things - bloody messy and clogs the vacuum cleaner filter up. Those adjustment nuts seize just looking sideways at them and I really cant see how it happens - and the fact the little blocks in them wear off very quickly(make the bastards out of titanium!!!).

hey while we are on the brake subject, if you want to do something like discs but dont have the cash maybe go hondas, cos even if they dont stop as good as 8.4's they will still stop it!

Nah i'm not going Hondas lol.
Its like chucking something poo on something wicked.
Doesn't work for me.

I'd rather spend the extra bit (lot) on proper discs that are guaranteed to work and are DESIGNED for the mini.

Lets keep it nice and simple...
if you drive like a P plater get discs
if you drive like an old granny keep the drums,
i had a boosted brake system on my 998 clubby and it was a bog standard
998. And lets face it if drums were any good they would still put them on all
four wheels of a car these day, but do they NO, maby sometimes just on the
rears.......
