Could you turn the car off with the clutch out and stall it? Would that work?

mmm.. havent lost my brakes (yet) but on sunday evening just past i was coming towards a roundabout in a small, narrow yet busy connector surburban street... usually traffic on the road i was on never stops at the roundabouts because cross-traffic is very rare.. besides this, the r/abouts are slightly raised, providing some interesting undulations if you're really driving. ANYWAY, the commo wagon infront braked early due to cross traffic (im guessing) and although i was maybe up to 50m behind i must admit i wasnt concentrating intently on the car ahead. nevertheless i jumped on the brakes fairly quick. What happened next is anyone's guess - i guess they probably locked and i spun, in hindsight probably about 100 degrees to the right, although my initial thought was that i spun to the left however that seems implausible. thankfully the spin was quite contained and traffic behind me was far enough to stop and wait for me to start and get going again - although im also lucky that there wasnt traffic coming the other way as it is quite a narrow road.

So there - dry road, crappy drum brakes = crap scary moment! also, the K's stock seats really didnt help, ive still got some lower back muscular pain from the lateral movement.

Mystik the one time that I spun 45 degrees I took the time to remind myself what a crap driver I actualy really am especialy so if I couldnt exactly explain what happened which means I do not understand my car and its dynamics fully, and to try and take more care in the future atleast until my driving and emergency reaction skills improve significantly.

not understanding my car's dynamics is a bit of a tough call - i know that im not the best driver out there - ive had no more specialised training than the next man but driving your car everyday in varying circumstances gives you a good knowledge of your own car,m and ive had this car for about a year. Thats why this puzzled me because previously my only experiences with the brakes had been positive, even if a little lacking in emergency stopping power. Anyway ill sure be adjusting them some time this week.

I was really talking about myself but I guess my point is that heaps of us are really just not much more than locomotive conductors - we know how to go in a straight line and change the stereo controls but once you clutch and brake sharp and the rear end starts overtaking you - most everyday drivers (deffinately me) either wouldn't know exactly what to do or would not react fast enough.

It seriously was not my intention to pass judgement on your driving (coz for all I know you could be a far better driver than me - which still doesnt say much :)) but it really does make sense that if you spun 100 degrees and youre not sure in which direction its entirely your fault even if your left brake is perfect and your right one doesnt bite at all - the same way that when I went into the gutter on 20kmh on a wet tight curve it was entirely my fault even if I did have a puncture midway.

Put a decent driver in either of those situations and they would have saved the day easily or never would have let them happen to begin with.

forget me ever saying i spun left cos i spun right... the biggest thing for me tho was reaction time.. just took forever for me to work out what was actually going on. but i guess that comes with experience.

When i first got Nav i took him out to a quiet place and found out exactly what you can and cannot do in a mini van, because all i'd driven up till then was falcons and commodores. I'd previously done advanced driver training but that was in my falcon so i knew most of what i was up to
The difference in Nav between a full tank and half a tank is amazing in a brake and swerve situation, with an almost empty tank the car tried to spin, i actually had to re apply power to pull it back in, which coming from rear drivers was un-natural to me. I could have easily spun the car off the road or worse into someone/thing else by applying the brakes or staying off the power.
Now i know Nav's limits wet and dry so i stay comfortably within them while locomoting to/from work etc.
I can't reccomend learning your car in a safe environment like a track day or skid pan enough cause one day it IS going to save your but

Removed the broken line this morning and went down to the local brake and clutch shop.
They made up a new line for me for $16.00. Will put it in today together with the braided metro conversion brake lines that l have had for a few months.
Was looking at an old mini book that l have last night and came across this photo.
It is the strangest modification l have seen to a mini. Can be viewed at

Put the new line in with the braided brake hoses and took the car for a quick spin.
Brakes working fine. Back on the road again
