Ok so my fronts *might* need replacing.
What are some signs of rooted shock absorbers?
I reckon that the fronts are the original ones, too

I had a nosey under there and it just appears to be two nylock nuts that hold the shocker in - one top, one bottom.

Any advice on prices/brands etc. is very helpful.

Thanks.

Easy....While you car is parked......
Give your front gaurd a good push push down...front or rear and if it dounce three times...Shocks are goooonnnnnnnnnee
Other wise...if it a knock...it something else...tierods...ball joints tierods or bushes  or something is looose
Is it when you turn the wheel or when you go over a bump :!:

When the wheels are turned, and theres a small bump in the road, there is kind of a ticking/clunking sound.
Its definitely not CVs.
It feels like its steering related.
But i dno if theres tierod ends at the steering rods that are worn? Maybe?
Anything else that could be moving around when it shouldnt?

Yeah it could be.
Do you mean the U bolts?
Or the steering rack ends where it comes onto the whole brake hub bit?

Ok cool.
And you just lifted the carpet and tightened them up?
How tight did you do it?
And what size is the nut again...

thanks.

My old workshop manual has got 8 to 9 ft/pounds (1 to 1.2 kg/m)
I think in general workshop terms it translates to simply turn it till it's tight enough if you haven't a torque wrench.
