I had my cooper s in Darwin for 6 years till 2002
The original mini dealer up there was Port Darwin Motors (They had the 4wd moke featured in that Aussie mini mag a few years back as they were testing them for BMC) They still are quite helpful and even had an Hydrolastic pump.
There's a few Mokes about, a yard full (approx. a dozen or so)of ex-rentals near the Stuart Hwy and Bagot Rd flyover. Wet season makes them a little unpleasent though...
Get used to ordering parts from o/seas or out of town. Local dealers are thieves and pirates (By there own admission no less, arrrrrrr me hearties!)
Good news is:
You won't have to worry too much about overheating cos the roads are empty around town and you generally hoon around at 80 or more.
You can negotiate with the police on the matter of speeding tickets. We got pulled over for having 6 people crammed in a mini and speeding (30 over) on Tiger Brennan Drive one late Saturday night from town and managed to negotiate down to a 10K over ticket. They even let us continue on home to Coonawarra. (hiccup! soz sorry orrificer...)
No points at all on NT licences. Start collecting interstate tickets with gay abandon (Your puny tickets can't hurt me officer...).
Roadworthies are free. They're done at the Rego Station on Goyder Rd.
Make sure you go out past Noonamah onto the no speed limit raod. Yee haa!
It's also good fun to take the mini onto the old WW2 airstrips for a blast, or the no speed limit dirt road to the back of Litchfield Natonal Park (Mind the Water Buffaloes on your left please...)
