Can you remember back to when you bought your first Mini? It might be only a few weeks ago, or decades ago. What made you want to buy one?

Many moons ago my mother had a Cooper S. One of the first off the production line!! She used to tear around the neighbourhood in it. Then she traded it in on a stock standard Mist Green Deluxe  She still regrets that she says, and then in '76 she bought a Clubby. So I guess with Mini's in the family genes I developed an interest. I bought mine 2 years ago, and it was the $500 price tag that got me. I was actually looking for an MGB at the time......

Over to you lot......

i saw an automatic
i can drive automatics
i bought the automatic

oh yeh and i had a looooong hard think about depreciation, intial sick-mayte sports car costs, arrogance, and pulling mortgage money out of my parents and my pocket, the long hard ignorant life of ricers and those who have been swept into Rice Creek who are now are half way up crap Creek, well almost there... theres that hideous wing left to put on
so an old car did me fine, just as long as it runs, i thought the only old car that would suit a 19 yr old kid was a mini!

My mate took me for a ride in his 850 back in 1963 (see my bent Mini thread). After the first corner I was hooked. It only had 5.20x10 crossply tyres on 3.5x10 rims too.
I had to get one. So I bought a S/H 850 with twin carbs off the local dealer at Dural. Local hotshot mechanic had owned and thrashed it, it went like a shell until I busted the crank...!
Then it started... engine upgrades- 850->1056->1098->1220->1275.. Then I fell in love with a Fiat 124S.. I bought it to pull chicks.. :P
The next week I was sorry I sold the Mini....

I was selling my Holden Calais POS, and looking for a cheaper smaller car for running to work, and buzzing around town in general. Couldnt find anything with a reasonable price, until my mother spotted the ad in the local rag. Popped around to have a look, and bought it the next day. The only thing I look back on, is all of the broken bits she's left lying on the road.

So far, that would be my Top Engine Steady Bracket. The front end of the exhaust. The front wheel bearings. The Drivers seat squab. The Interior fan, the passenger window winder. The indicator stalk. And finally the rear exhaust mounts, which gave my car that great speedway Demolition Derby look. Might even be one or two more in there somewhere LOL

When I was growing up my Grandmother had a 998 Cooper. Some family members cliam this was the first car I rode in - on the way home from the hospital when I was born. It was traded on a new Torana in 1978!

I grew up watching the Italian Job, but also watching Herbie movies. When I was getting close to my 16th birthday my Grandfather offered to buy me my first car. I wanted a Beetle as my first choice, a Mini as my second. After looking at a lot of Beetles, we could not find a good one. Then my Grandfather found a Mini in the local paper. 1968 Mini Deluxe 998cc - White with Red trim, NSW reg AJR.413. A couple of small rust spots but otherwise immaculate, with just 70,000 miles on the clock and owned by one family from new. He bought it for $1300 and gave it to me. That one started the addiction...

I sold it in 1991 to buy a Gemini and expected never to see it again.

After passing through two owners it has now been restored and is owned by a Mini Car Club of NSW member. So it is good hands anyway!

I remember my first mini. Scarlet O'Hara red. I was driving an apple green Datsun 120Ybother and I spotted the mini and thought back to the days when an old school mate and I used to fang around his back yard in a Clubbie van..
$800 later and I had my first mini... sigh.. I've gone all misty now :D lol

First car Morrie Oxford - from an little old lady who got side swiped by a 10 ton truck - price $50
Second car - Morrie Minor - gearbox blew up 2 hours after delivery.

Dad's advice: "Second hand cars is just buying someone else's problems. Buy a new car son."

Only model new car I could afford was the Leyland Mini. Year was 1976, and I took a shining to the very 70's Hairy Lime green van in the showroom. Stock standard, no money after the credit company had had their pound of flesh, but Brand Spanking New.

Dad was right
