Hi Kids,

My daughter, Shermn (I think- on here) will be collecting her engine from the re-co people in a week or two and Daddy has to rebuild it.

I did my 1100 some time back and it runs well but I need the answer to a question please......I cant remember which way the distributor drive dog goes?? There's a slot in the top of the drive that is off-centre. When the cam and crank are at TDC, where should the slot be facing. (Must be getting old or something)

Cheers folks

the large offset goes at the top with the slot just below horizontal as you insert it, and will turn anti clockwise and take up a position pointing between 1 and 2 o'clock when it's fully home... need a picture?

that's from old SP #64

Thanks a million.......picture isn't necessary. On thinking more about things, I could have pulled the dizzy off my 1100 when it was at TDC.

Hmm......embarassed look on my face

Cheers - I'll buy you a beer at Poeee's 21st!!

Further question ................ is there any way of checking an oil pump or should I just replace it with a "brand spanker" when reconditioning an engine for my little girl???

And......the fuel pump leaks but doesn't appear to be able to be serviced. How the hell do I pull it apart to put in a new diaphragm??

Thanks kindly

always replace the oil pump....

the fuel pump ought to have a screw/bolt on the top of it, but I don't use them so someone else will be better answering that one... you can buy reco kits for them, but ditch it and get an electric one I say

Fit the distributor drive before you fit the motor to the gearbox. 8)

New engine = New oil pump. You can pull the cover off the pump and check it, if it has any grooves or marks bin it.

Early fuel pumps can be rebuilt later fuel pumps are a throw away item. If yours has no screws it is a later one.
I prefer the mechanical pumps for street use as they are fool proof.

it's the distributor drive - the part that the distributor slots into, the distributor itself will only go into that one way, but the drive will go into the engine any number of ways...

Oil pumps are relatively cheap - buy a new one regardless and if you have the few extra dollars - buy a sureflow one - they are machined to tighter tolerances and more consistant.

I hope and presume you are using new cam followers and a good quality "start-up" lubricant all the way through engine assembly. Prime the oil pump from the pipe to the oil filter (or oil cooler) just prior to starting the engine. The first few seconds on a dry engine on start up can totally undo all the machine, parts and assembly work and it only takes a few seconds

Good luck

as said b4 the early pumps can be rebuilt but the later ones are a sealed unit.

You have two options
1. buy a new mechanical pump, the early type that is fully servicable - $66 karcraft
2. Electric pump - similar price i thinks

I would go the mechanical as they are quieter, simpler, easier to service an will run and run and run. But others will argue this.

Cheers Ryan

And when the motor stops the pump stops. Not like an electric pump that will keep fueling the fire after the crash.
