with my new project i want to know in what order i should go about sanding it...

ok im going to sand back the car with 80 grit.. then primer it...in 2 pac primer (and deaden on the inside and underside of the car) i was wondering how many times i should sand it back.. and with what grade paper.. thats all.. for a reasonably good prep..

also i want to paint the engine... do you have to spereate the block from the gearbox to paint it ?... and would you just use degreaser and prepsole to prep for painting ?

80grit might be a bit coarse for what you need!!

i think that 120 would be the roughest paper to use!!


can anyone shed any light on this?

80 is too coarse and will show alot of imperfections - start off with 80 and work your way up to around 400 or 600

people suggest between 400 and 600 on the autobody101 forums and jam used 400wet/dry

if u got to sand it back to bare metal then its fine when u prime it then sand it u use 240 and so on

Yeh use the 80 grit to get it down to bare metal...as far as i know...i didnt have to, so less knowledge there.

-But if there isnt too many layers of paint, use something like 120 to rub it back. This allows the primer to stick a little nicer...ur not taking all the paint off, only the glossy feel to it.

If u do use a courser grit paper, u might have to use less thinners in the primer, for a thicker fill. gets into the lil scratches.

ONCE primer is on:

- THICK / ROUGHER primer coat, sand down with 600 or so..

If you use a wet coat of primer, use something like 800.

DONT FORGET.... Before you go to put any paint on, use wax and grease romover on a clean rag and wipe down the car.

80 grit will be ok jsut go over it with a 120 then a ... etc

You guys are lazy and farken butchers using 80 grit!!!

That is so coarse!!

You might get things done quick, and think it looks pretty sweet, but when you get that gloss on it at the end, you might end up seeing scratch marks galore in your finished job.

If you actually care about what you are doing, and the job at hand, don't even think about using that to remove paint.

It might be acceptable to shape filler, but that would be the only time I personally would use it.
