I was thinking its time to have a topic listing the things that are not passable on minis when its your turn for a FORCED inspection in Adelaide (which are usually very rare, once in 5 or 10 years if you're unlucky)

Here are a few things that i have come across. Feel free to add other ones that Regency said "NO" to.

- WEBER carbys. You CANT have one fitted to a mini.
- SPACERS of any kind between your brake drums and your wheels are ILLEGAL. Stepped drums are fine.
- GLOSS PAINT around the dials on your dash is illegal. It MUST be a flat finish, not shiny or reflective..
- WIDENED (modified) steel rims are illegal.
- The dB reading (noise level) for your exhaust must be under 96dB!!
- You must have 100mm ground clearance at the lowest point of your car.
- Braided flexible hoses are illegal. This goes for brake hoses, radiator, fuel, etc etc....

I will add more next time i'm here..... can anyone else add to this??

IF it can be poved that it was a FACTORY FITTED part, it should be no problem.. <------And that goes for all car parts.

Does this mean you can't get an unregistered Mini put back on the road if fitted with a Weber etc? If so its freakin' ridiculous....

most of those points are the same for NSW too. not sure on the weber thing.

mine was 94db, 80mm ground clearance, and has braided brake lines but passed engineering and blue slip like that, so i spose i was lucky

the 100mm rule is australia wide, just rarely enforced. My van got defected a little while back cos the exhaust was at about 60mm - no way I could move it up cos there just isn't the space for a 2.25" system under there. So on went the 12" wheels and up went the hilo's and voila 100mm. My mechanic mate is a roadworthy inspector, and he couldn't believe I got defected for it... he'd roadworthied it for registration as it was about 3 months earlier - we checked the regulations book and sure enough... every day I see cars with defects that make them extremely dangerous, like only the window mounted brake light working, but me in my well maintained but slightly low mini gets ****ed over - I don't have a problem with speeding fines, etc. but I don't see how a low exhaust is that dangerous - I don't drive places where it'll get ripped off...

before minis were first released in Australia, the rule was 150mm, they actually changed the regulation to let them on the road

Sometimes you just gotta love living in Tassie...

I have been pulled up for 2 'on the spot' roadworthy checks in the last 12 months (freaky in itself down here - no-one else in my family has ever had one in 30+ years of driving!!) and all the copper has done is walk around the car, got me to turn on the indicators, press the brake, check tyres and look at the winscreen (cracks etc) and wooshta, I am on my way again... One of the times the copper told me my numberplate covers (plastic cover things that were on the car when I got it) were technically illegal but he thought the rule was crap so he sent me on my way... Thats all they do - no annual or 3 yearly or whatever compulsory roadworthy checks, no regular inspections... Tassie would have to be the slackest state in Australia for this type of stuff...

A bloke I know has just finished fitting a turbo 13B rotary into his Mazda Bravo ute, and all they did when he went to get it inspected was just give a quick glance under the bonnet, check the tyres, check the brakes and sign the form for him... Anyone who was dead keen to do a Swift GTi or a Starlet GT engine conversion would be laughing down here...

Legal in Qld- animal got his thru certification OK, last I heard he was doing 5 more sets..
Put the 2 screws in though!

But if you're really paranoid get some Performance Superlights, then no need for spacers..

I have been driving for 12 years and never once had a roadworthy done. Only know one guy who has! Was gonna have the mini off the road for ages so I rang rego office, she said that no need for roadworthy, no matter how long it's off the road for.

Only people I know who have had to go to regency are from Vic to change their plates over.
I wanted to cut my backseat out, so I asked my mini mech if it was legal and he said to do it, how are regency gonna know?..so I did.

Dunno if I should really say......oh well, the bloke that runs minitech down off marion road.

His full advice was to ring regency and ask if it was legal (not give them my details) or just do it anyway, regardless of what they say-if I was so inclined to do so-just dont get pulled over!

I know a few cops and they are not the gustapo some would have you believe, cept maybe the motorbike cops, their meant to be a bit weird

Ah yes.... Jacks on bikes...... the guy 2 doors down from me was one for years, and he is definitely wierd.

Picture this.....
Its a Sunday. The cop is mowing his lawn. A friend of mine drives by and stops at my place for a quick chat, leaving the engine running, and the stereo is off. He drives off in a bit of a hurry, but no burnout. 30 minutes later he comes back. My cop neighbour walks over and hands him a fine for excessive noise, and threatened to defect the car, which was an immaculate and original, 2 owner gemini. The cop was off duty and it was his weekend off. Talk about a wierdo.
