I'm thinking of putting together a "Identifying Flares - How Too" because all too often this topic comes up.

I'm after pictures of different types of flares, what they are called and what cars they will fit with what mods. I'd prefer if the picture is of the flare on the car.

The one at the top is actually an extra wide factory flare. These were about an inch wider than standard.

The next ones down are Inocenti ones, but they are for a round nose (even though they are fitted to a clubbie here).

The last ones also look like Inocenti ones correctly fitted to a roundie.

Some other others there I don't recognise.

The one at the top is definitely not a wide one. It is my car.

the black "uknown" on cream car = wood and picket
the group 2 on the cooper S are mk2 Cooper S flares are they not?
group 2 look nothing like that...

Mine are the same as this and I was told by a mini specialist they were "group 2's". I was told by a previous owner they were a factory flare purchased from BMC but I'm not sure if thats correct.

They are the same design and (apparently) contact the same area of the body as the standard flare.

The extra width means they will cover a 6in wide wheel better.

That is what I had always believed, but according to others this is not the case......hmmmmm

does anyone know if they are still available? I'd love a set.

I have a set one new backing plates for both the standard and wide factory flares.

The standard front ones have a 30 mm width backing plate (measured at the top of the wheel arch).

The Factory ST 'extra wide' ones are 60 mm measured at the same point.

Real nice looking car BTW. 8)

I'm still looking for arches for my mini. I'm ditching the innocenti ones because they look cheap and nasty. I like the look of the Wood and Pickett arches and would buy them in a heartbeat if i could guaruntee that they actually fit my mini without issue.

I bought some fibreglass Group5 arches and they seem a bit wide for the wheels i have. I am not 100% sold on them and am not prepared to drill holes to fit them in case i change my mind.

Can anyone rate the various flare types in regards to their ease of fitment and quality of fitment to a '67 roundnose that's running 12" x 5" superlights with discs and spaced rear drums.

I'm thinking that there's minimal room for adjustment if a fibreglass flare is the wrong shape. Is that a fair statement? Should i be looking for the rubbery plastic type like Sportspacks? Sportspacks are unfortunately too wide, i think. :?

Lastly, trusted sources for these things? i'm thinking that buying from overseas seems inevitable.

not 2 sure what these ones are called but they look good and fit great, but still not wide enough though. :wink: :wink:
