Do early mark 2's have the holes on the firewall where the build plate went on the mark 1's? I have the two holes but no plate as you would expect on a mk 2

I think from March '69 to Dec '69 there were no body ID plates fitted, either the build plate or the compliance one.
Compliance plates were mandated from Jan 1970 I think, but Dec '69 might have them.

This is a June(ish) 69, and it does not have the holes.
But while they frittered around between old and new, anything might have occurred.

Thanks Dr Mini. I was aware of that. What I was asking were the holes for the plate pre-drilled in the firewall before the car was assembled. I have two holes there but no plate.

Mick.

Looks like the holes each side of your paint code sticker?? Or am I seeing things?

Alex.

That is what I am thinking too. They deleted the ID plate and fitted a paint sticker in its place. Might as well fit it in the same spot.
My stuff says both June and July was the changeover depending on which book you read.

Oh!

I thought you meant the new plate position on the cross member!

Got ya, hope the image clarifies things anyway...

I've always wondered why didn't they just put the compliance plate in the same spot as the old ID plate. Perhaps it needed to be more visible.

Both our early Mk2 S (no ID or compliance plate) and late Mk2 S (square compliance plate on the triangular cross member bracer) have the two holes on the bulkhead for the old style ID plate. In both cases, the holes are covered by the foil paint code stickers.

The last 1969 Mk2 I had a few years back had the two holes and the paint sticker between them. Under the paint sticker there was a number stamped , although I can't recall its significance

It probably would not have been worth the hassle to alter the jig setup to not drill the holes.

But they need to be covered @ sealed....

 ... use the paint stickers!

Funny thing is they had to alter the jig to add the extra speedo mounting point right next to it.

They are not `drilled holes' they are pierced by punches & dies in a press tool.
I'm pedantic, I know..
