I think there was a topic about this aggess ago. I tried searching for it, but no luck. Anyway I've just noticed latley that the mini is smelling really strongly of petrol when you drive in it (a lot more then usual). After just a few mins of driving people tell me i stink of petrol.
I've checked the tanks and hoses for leaks but havn't noticed anything.. Any idea what it could be? (sorry if this is a stupid question)

First thing that comes to mind:
A basic and general Mini flaw.

Uh check ya lines, hoses, etc.
Make sure your tank is venting.
Check for leaks around your fuel pump and fuel filter too.

If they all seem to be right, just disregard it as a general mini fault which is what we all seem to do these days. :)

Yep I've checked pretty much all of that. I just thought it was strange since it was never as bad... and recently both my window winding handle things are broken, so I've got no ventelation either hahah

Does the motor have a proper PCV system, or external breathers? The latter are notorious for causing fumes in the car..!
If it has a PCV, maybe something is blocked..

If it is a cooper S, don't they vent through a hole in side the left parcel bin in the rear? Maybe the vent pipe is inside the car instead of out of it? - anyone more experienced with Cooper S's care to comment?

All Minis (including S) are unsealed around the back seat to the boot. Maybe a vent pipe is off the tank or is damaged underneath where it goes thru the boot floor....

this is sorta off track a bit, but is ur gear boot gaiter on, because that protects engine fumes coming up through into the car..aparentley

hey h0nk....I had exactly this problem when I first started driving Pops.

My issue was the fuel pump. The screws on top of the fuel pump needed tightening, because fuel was seeping through the seal on the top plate.

After tightening them up, the smell was gone.

Mine was bad enough to make me feel very sick when driving!

I get mild fumes in my car occasionly, I think it is coming through the gear boot/gaiter thing, as it is only holding on by about an inch of rubber.

yeah, it's likely to be coming from the mechanical fuel pump (if you've got one) or the carb - wipe any fuel or oil or junk off the carb bowl and run the motor and watch and see if you get fuel seeping out

Possible float bowl needle is stuck and fuel just keeps pumping out of it.

I have not had nay probs otherwise.

Yeah my external breathers were so bad they made me very sick and I had to take the car off the road. Eventually blew the car up with dynamite and never went back to Mini's.

i had many of these problems
To fix it (not completely) i have
* pluged all holes from the boot to the cab
* Put a new fuel pump on (the old one leaked)
*Fixed any dodgy fuel lines (should be done anyway)

I find that the smell is greater when i go round corners because of the splillage of fuel out the tops of the tanks. I have learnt to only half fill each tank (a benifit of twin tanks).
Its funny, cos if i go round a corner to fast i tell my mates that it was an expensive corner, they ask y, and i tell them because i lost half my fuel out the back of the car. hahahh
