OH MY GOD

How does something like this happen????

Pretty easily. Usual cause is imperfect radius put in the corners when crank was ground or reground. Creates a good stress raiser there- in time, with spirited driving, it fatigues and goes bang!

ok Doc so you know who built my motor. Is this something that he (IMO The best engine builder for mini's in the whole friggen world) can make less likeelly to occur? like would that have happened due to some bad workmanship? or is it something that is not really preventable? Do i need to be more gentle on my little girl? it was lightened and balanced..does that make a difference?

Chris if GR built it, Spiro would have ground the crank. He does nice work, so don't worry too much...

phew. thats cool. i thought so.

Wow.
I was always told 1100s had a predisposition to such injuries but I never really believed it would happen.

This can happen with any Mini crank. I've done 850, 997, & 1098 personally.

I've seen 1100S (1275) small journal, big journal and 1275S cranks go.
My 1275S crank is presently OK (touches wood) and as Spiro ground it I hope it stays that way.

998s I've never owned, but I'm sure they will break too if you try hard enough..

I've just been at Graham's getting a tutorial on the "Musical Crank Crack Test"

I THINK I have a crank lined up - will hopefully check it out/pick it up tonight.

I will do the said crack test, then take it all to Graham's in the morning before taking it to Spiro's.

Hopefully I'm underway and my luck will get better from here on in :D Image

While you`re at it Bob,,,why don`t you chase arounf for some A+ con rods for that lovely new crank you`re getting,,,???????????

ask GR & see what he says about their (A+ rods) quallity as opposed to those lumps of crud con rods you have in that old donk of yours :-)

I think GR had some A+ ones, a while back....
Of course, if you are still going to stroke it, they won't be any good to you!!

yeah,,,but are you going to stroke the new crank???

if so, then Narrowed "S" rods are the norm ,,,rip 15thou off each side of each rod & shove em in :-)
