wow thanks for all the tips guys, plenty of ways to skin a cat!
the re-build was done my my dad and his dad (dad works at ford and his dad is an ex-mechanic) in our garage at home. but i will have a chat to our local mini man and see what he has to say.
but basically i have to run in the cam (does this also mean pushrods, rockers + valves, valve springs and valve seats??? i think we are putting an ULP head on)
not glaze the bores, and bed the rings. yeah???
oh and oil change after 1000.
so many differeing opinions, but at least you aren't arguing.
i think where i ahve previously gone wrong is i ahve been babying it, no hard revs, running a little before driving in the morning, no exceeding 80kph and varying the speed up to 1000 kms (80-60) then up to 90-70, then 100-80, then 100-90, then 100,each stage after the first i was doing for about 250 kms, so the whole process was for about 2000kms worth...
There are many ways to skin a cat but all work for every individual. I am hitting Black Mountain in mine(up and down for about 3-4 hours!!!). The other thing is use the running in oil - at $28 a pop it is good insurance for the motor as will smoke for ever and a day.
Take out the plugs and give it a few squirts in each of the running in oil'
Crank until you get oil pressure(10-15 seconds with a 5 second break between cranks). If no pressure, remove the banjo bolt and squirt oil into the hole leading into the block and down the tube to the oil filter. The filter pipe will fill quickly as you have already filled the filter with clean oil. You should get good pressure pretty well straight away, if not repeat.
Once pressure is there, replace the spark plugs in the head, giving each bore a final squirt of oil,
Once started, let it run for a minute or 2, keeping revs above 2000rpm and try not to flutter the carby(try and keep it constant and steady...). There will be lots of smoke initially(oil in the bores)but it goes away fairly quickly(and the kids love it too!!!). Do a quick look about for leaks and the likes while the engine idling. Shut it down and torque up the head bolts straight away(the book says 40-45 ft/lb but I torque them down another 20 percent ~50 ft/lb).
Check for leaks again...this is when paranoia sets in...lol
Start the car again and drive it. The cam will bed in when you take off and take it really easy until the whole shebang is warm - then drive normally.
This worked on Clevos ad there is twice as much that can go wrong. I did a Hemi 12 months ago and still holding together(Bathurst 225ci) and using the advice from Terry and others in the club here in Canberra.
Drop the running in oil at 500km and fill with cheapo 20W50 from Woolies or the likes. Change the filter too and have a look at the crap inside it(swarf and bits of stuff that was missed...you will see it here and on the sump plug - hopefully nothing big or chunky...). I found a bit of a pipe cleaner in the filter...go figure!!
Drive for a further 100-200 km on the cheapo oil and drop it again(pain in the arse isn't it!). Fill with your favourite poison and happy times.
Hope all goes well for you - I am itching to get it on with the new motor...
